* First game in the series to run on BEMANI FIREBEAT HARDWARE, which was also used for ''beatmania III'', ''Keyboard Mania'', and ''ee-mall''. The colors and graphics were noticeably more colorful and more detailed than ever as a result of the more powerful hardware. Firebeat would be used through ''Pop'n Music 8''.

== General Information / Changes ==
* First pop'n music game to run on BEMANI FIREBEAT HARDWARE, which was also used for [[AC bm III|beatmania III]] and [[AC KBM|KEYBOARDMANIA]]. The colors and graphics are more colorful and detailed than ever as a result of the more powerful hardware.
** It also allowed for the return of a lot of the removed characters from the earlier arcade pop'n music games.
** FIREBEAT would be used through [[AC pnm 8|pop'n music 8]].
** With 87 playable songs, pop'n music 4 had the largest song list in the series until [[AC pnm 7|pop'n music 7]] (not counting course-exclusive songs in [[AC pnm 6|pop'n music 6]]).
* [[Kiyoshi Murai|Seiya Murai]] joins the pop'n music team. He would serve as a sound director of every game from here until [[AC pnm 16|pop'n music 16 PARTY♪]], with the sole exception of pop'n music 6.
** [[Hiroki Koga]] starts writing his own music for the series.
* First pop'n music game to:
** have speed modifiers (though only 2X).
** where HYPER charts are playable outside of courses in the arcade, and the first game to individually rate them.
** display BPM of songs on music select.
** divide games into categories (1-4, as well as an ALL folder).
** to have a distinctive interface (1-3 were essentially the same interface with color differences).
* Only mainline pop'n music game prior to [[AC pnm Lapistoria|pop'n music ラピストリア]] without individual song, MISS, and FEVER backgrounds. Instead, backdrops are used as the background for songs.
