* First European DanceDanceRevolution arcade release to be named "DanceDanceRevolution" instead of "Dancing Stage".
* First European DanceDanceRevolution arcade release to be named "DanceDanceRevolution" instead of "Dancing Stage".
* Rating system expanded on, from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see X difficulty changes list).
* Difficulty ratings have been expanded from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see the X difficulty changes list).
* New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace Londell "Taz" Hicks, which was used in the series since DDRMAX.
* Much like DDRMAX did in 2001, X changed up a lot of things in the series:
* This release retired the Python 2 hardware used since SuperNOVA and replaced it with PC-based hardware (BEMANI PC). This improved the graphics quality of the game on all cabinets, and allowed 720p widescreen HD graphics on new cabinets, but also meant that the game was slightly buggier than its predecessors due to migration issues.
** New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace Londell "Taz" Hicks from DDRMAX.
** The American and European versions of X and its sequel run on modified Dell PCs instead.
** The game now runs on BEMANI PC, running at 720p widescreen with HD graphics on new cabinets, though at the cost of bugginess (the American and European versions of X and its sequel run on modified Dell PCs instead).
* Shock Arrows introduced, exclusive to CHALLENGE charts, which feature an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down like a misstep would.
** New arrows in the form of Shock Arrows; exclusive to CHALLENGE charts, they feature an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down like a misstep would.
** CD designs for songs return for the first time since since DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX CS.
** Characters can now dance to dedicated dance routines. Selected HOTTEST PARTY crossovers had their dance routines carried over, while selected X songs received new dance routines. For new songs without dedicated dance routines (excluding X-Specials), characters will dance a different choreography from the HOTTEST PARTY games depending on the maximum BPM of the song:
*** 131 to 159 BPM: escape or Closer to my Heart (jun remix).
*** 160 BPM or higher: I WANT YOUR LOVE (Darwin remix) or REACH THE SKY (Orbit1 remix).
** New mods added: nine new SPEED modifiers (x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5), SCREEN FILTER (to mask your play area, with the options of OFF, DARK, DARKER, and DARKEST), CUT modifier ON being renamed to ON1, with a new ON2 modifier that removes all non-4th/8th notes.
** Modifier text colors are now distinguishable in options: green for default, white for modified.
** Combos are now color-coded, based on judgements obtained during a song: white for all MARVELOUS, yellow for at least one PERFECT, and green for at least one GREAT.
** Getting a FULL COMBO will now produce a laser-beam splash effect, with the color based on the combo color attained.
** Obtaining an N.G. from a Freeze Arrow or a set of Shock Arrows now breaks your combo.
** Many charts were adjusted to use proper triplets (12th, 24th, and 48th notes), instead of rounding them to the nearest 64th note.
* Scoring system is similar to SuperNOVA2's, with some modifications:

* Subtitles for every song are now merged with song titles at the right side.
* Options can now be set on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.
* The EXTREME folder from SuperNOVA2 is now separated into eight folders: 1stMIX→EXTREME.

* BOOM DARK, a darker variant of the BOOM BOOM BOOM stage, is introduced in this installment. It did not appear in the CS releases.
* A third cut-in type is introduced; a different portrait of the player's selected character that appears when the player is halfway through the song and again when the player is 90% done with the song.
* All PARANOiA and TRIP MACHINE songs' banners had their fonts changed.
** However, TRIP MACHINE PhoeniX's English banner remained unaltered in the North American/European release.
* First and only game with Xmix songs, double-length songs consisting of medleys of songs from DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2; playing an Xmix song takes two non-Xmix stages. They appear on the penultimate STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.
* To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DanceDanceRevolution franchise, several old Dancemania licenses are revived with new charts and cuts. These are known as X-edits.

EXTRA STAGE
The following songs are medleys of several DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2 songs. Much like the DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX Long Version songs, playing an Xmix takes two non-Xmix stages. None of the Xmixes have BEGINNER or CHALLENGE charts. They appear on second to the FINAL STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.
Requirements for obtaining EXTRA STAGE are identical to DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2; please see its page for more details.

{{DDR Songlist Header|
To access EXTRA STAGE, the song played on FINAL STAGE has to be either On The Break or a song on RANDOM on any difficulty by obtaining at least an AA.

Unlockable Songs
To access On The Break for FINAL STAGE, all songs prior must be cleared with at least an A on any difficulty (getting a AA will automatically make all difficulties available).
FINAL / EXTRA STAGE / ENCORE EXTRA STAGE
* If playing on BEGINNER, you must also obtain a FULL COMBO.
All songs new to DanceDanceRevolution X were unlocked for normal play on October 1st, 2009, except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special).
* Playing a CHALLENGE chart with a A only unlocks EXPERT difficulty.
* If playing on BATTLE, the CPU level must be at least two stars upon reaching FINAL STAGE.
* If playing Xmix songs, getting A will satisfy FINAL STAGE requirements automatically.

On FINAL STAGE, the available difficulties for On The Break depend on the performance grade the player obtains on any stage prior to FINAL STAGE:
Clearing FINAL STAGE with a score between 950,000 and 962,490 gives the player two battery lives on EXTRA STAGE, between 962,500 and 974,990 gives three, and 975,000 or higher gives four. This is one more battery life compared to SuperNOVA2.
* AA or AAA: all difficulties available.
* A on any difficulty: only that difficulty is available. If an A is obtained in CHALLENGE difficulty, EXPERT will be available for FINAL STAGE instead.

By clearing On The Break (or RANDOM, using the available difficulties for On The Break) on FINAL STAGE with a AA or AAA, EXTRA STAGE will be available afterwards.
All songs new to DanceDanceRevolution X (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) were unlocked for normal play on October 1st, 2009, and its EXTRA STAGE system is still accessible.

On EXTRA STAGE, the player must select either SABER WING or SABER WING (AKIRA ISHIHARA Headshot mix) (using the available difficulty for SABER WING), or an EXTRA STAGE-exclusive X-Special chart, and obtain AA or AAA to proceed to ENCORE EXTRA STAGE afterwards.
SABER WING and its remix SABER WING (AKIRA ISHIHARA Headshot mix) are the only songs available by default during EXTRA STAGE, provided that the player accumulate the following foot ratings leading up to the EXTRA STAGE:

During EXTRA STAGE, the LIFE GAUGE is restricted to LIFE4; the number of lives on EXTRA STAGE depend on the score obtained on FINAL STAGE.

X-Special Charts
Clearing either EXTRA STAGE song with at least an AA will grant access to ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. Clearing SABER WING will unlock Horatio for the ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, while playing its remix will get on the bounce or Trigger (providing if the player fulfills Foot Rating requirements above).
Exclusive to the arcade version of DanceDanceRevolution X are X-Special Charts, which are old DanceDanceRevolution original songs with brand-new, CHALLENGE-exclusive charts. These charts are initially only playable on the EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA STAGEs. Each mix consists of two songs: an EXTRA STAGE and an ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. There are 8 sets of songs from the first game through EXTREME (in the case of DDRMAX through EXTREME, the EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA STAGEs are in the same pattern as the original games' songs). These charts are all listed under their original category, before being moved to the DanceDanceRevolution X category in X2, despite being old songs.

The first set of stages (for the 1st game) were added on February 12th, 2009. The other songs were added to DanceDanceRevolution X on March 16th, 2009, but were not unlocked until much later. To unlock the X-Special charts, the player must complete certain requirements for the FINAL STAGE, usually relating to the mix of origin of the song set. All the X-Special charts were unlocked for normal play on October 1st, 2009 (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)).
On The Break was unlocked for normal play on April 9th, 2009, followed by SABER WING and its remix on May 21st, 2009, Horatio on July 2nd, 2009, on the bounce on August 13th, 2009, and Trigger on September 17th, 2009.

PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special) appears only on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. To select it, player must select SP-TRIP MACHINE~JUNGLE MIX~(X-Special) on EXTRA STAGE and obtain AA or AAA, and use RANDOM selection and CHALLENGE difficulty on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.
X-Special Charts
Added on February 12th, 2009, X-Special Charts are special CHALLENGE-only charts for older DanceDanceRevolution songs from the first game through EXTREME. Each game consist of two songs where they are previously boss songs (in the case of DDRMAX through EXTREME, EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA songs). These songs appear in their respective folders upon their appearance. Clearing the respective X-Special song with at least an AA grade will access the corresponding version's ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.

Unlock Schedule
The other seven set of songs were added on March 16th, 2009 and all of these songs (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) were unlocked for regular play on October 1st, 2009. Like EXTRA Stage songs, these songs require a clear with at least an AA grade or better before reaching FINAL STAGE. To
All the X-Special songs require special conditions in order to make them appears. Even when unlocked for normal play, the songs below can still be played using the EXTRA STAGE system.
