beatmania 4thMIX 〜the beat goes on〜

Release Information

  • Release date:
    • Japan: April 26th, 1999
    • Korea: 1999 (as beatstage 4thMIX 〜the beat goes on〜)

General Information / Changes

4thTitle.png
  • All previous beatmania songs have been removed, and are replaced with a brand-new set of 23 songs.
  • The menu and gameplay interfaces have been totally redesigned; the new design features lots of purple, and computerized elements.
  • Difficulty levels are now on a scale of 1 to 7.
  • The BATTLE modifier was changed so that if a chart that does not allow BATTLE is selected, it would instead play a lower difficulty chart with BATTLE (no message appears to indicate such).
    • Previously, if such a chart was selected, a message saying "BATTLE PLAY NOT AVAILABLE" would appear and a DOUBLE chart would be played instead.
    • This new behavior was also used in 5thMIX, but was reverted to the old behavior in completeMIX 2 and then used in all subsequent games.
  • The score calculation of BASIC and HARD MODE are unique:
    • GOOD = 100,000 ÷ TotalNotes ÷ 5
    • GREAT (1-10) = 100,000 ÷ TotalNotes + 50,000 ÷ (45 + 10 × (TotalNotes - 10)) × (Combo - 1)
    • GREAT (11-more) = 100,000 ÷ TotalNotes + 50,000 ÷ (45 + 10 × (TotalNotes - 10)) × 10
    • JUST GREAT (1-10) = 150,000 ÷ TotalNotes + 50,000 ÷ (45 + 10 × (TotalNotes - 10)) × (Combo - 1)
    • JUST GREAT (11-more) = 150,000 ÷ TotalNotes + 50,000 ÷ (45 + 10 × (TotalNotes - 10)) × 10
  • First beatmania game to include licenses and BEMANI crossovers.
  • First beatmania game to list artists for the song on the song select screen.
  • First beatmania game where all songs have at least two sets of charts on Single and Double.
  • First beatmania game sound directed by Takehiko Fujii, who would stay on this position until the last beatmania game.
  • First beatmania game where GOOD does not break your combo.
  • First beatmania game that allows the gameplay UI's color scheme (frame color) to be selected.

Codes & Unlock Information

Unlock All Songs

  • To unlock all songs in BASIC or HARD mode, follow the steps below on the title screen while it says to press either START button.
  1. Press keys 6-10-9-8-9-8-9-6-7-6, 6-10-9-8-9-8-9-6-7-6, 6 (this pattern is from the chorus section of deep in you).
  2. Press START, then press and hold 2+4+EFFECT until the title screen completely fades out.
  • If successful, after BASIC or HARD mode is selected, deep in you will appear on the song select screen when the turntable is rotated counterclockwise.
  • The unlocked state will not save between games, and the code must be entered each time before the game is started.

Unlock Secret EXPERT Courses

  • To unlock the secret EXPERT courses (SPECIAL; ANOTHER; HORRIBLE), follow the steps below.
    • Note that these steps require access to the DIP switches inside the machine.
  1. Either turn the machine off, or enter the TEST MENU.
  2. Set DIP switches 1-1, 2-1, and 3-5 to ON and 1-2 to OFF.
  3. Either turn the machine on, or exit the TEST MENU.
  • If successful, SPECIAL, ANOTHER, and HORRIBLE will appear in the list on the course select screen.
  • The unlocked state will remain active as long as those DIP switches are set to those positions.
    • Note that DIP switch 2-1 normally controls whether to hide the score display; when the above DIP switch combination is set, DIP switch 3-6 controls it instead.

Select Options

  • To select options, do so on the title screen while it says to press either START button, via one or both of the methods below.
  • Available options will differ according to the method used, and whether Event Mode is enabled.
Options Menu
  • Press and hold the following key button(s) for each option.
    • 1 (left white key on 1P side): BATTLE
    • 3 (middle white key on 1P side): DOUBLE
    • 5 (right white key on 1P side): HIDDEN
  • This method is not available while Event Mode is enabled.
Turntable
  • Rotate the turntable in the direction and number of times specified below to select one of the following options (only one can be selected).
    • MIRROR: Turn the 2P turntable counterclockwise three times.
    • RANDOM: Turn the 2P turntable clockwise three times.
  • If performing the code for MIRROR activates RANDOM (or vice versa), the turntable wiring is reversed and should be corrected.
    • When the turntable wiring is correct, rotating the turntable clockwise increases the turntable value in the I/O TEST menu, and moves the cursor down on the MODE SELECT screen.
  • When one of these options is selected, after START is pressed the text "MIRROR PLAY" or "RANDOM PLAY" will appear on screen, before the MODE SELECT screen appears.
    • However, while Event Mode is enabled, this text will not appear, and there will be no visible indication that one of these options was selected.
  • This method is available even while Event Mode is enabled.

Play Hidden Songs

  • There are two methods for unlocking the hidden songs deep in you, SPACED OUT, and peace-out for play, which are as follows.
    • Note that both methods can be used for Event Mode while it is enabled.
  • Method for BASIC or HARD
  • Method for HARD Only
    • On the title screen, press 6-9-8-10-7-9-6-10 (this pattern is from the middle section of PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~).
    • Press START, then press and hold EFFECT until the title screen completely fades out.
      • If successful, SPACED OUT will be playable for the first stage; peace-out will be playable for the second-to-last stage; deep in you will playable for the second-to-last and last stages.

Select Frame Color

  • To select the frame color, do so from the MODE SELECT screen by pressing the following buttons.
    • Frame Color: 1P or 2P START (on an active play side)
      • Default: Purple
      • One: Gray
      • Two: Gold
      • Three: Red
      • Four: Blue
      • Five: Moss Green
      • Six: White
      • Seven: Brown
      • Eight: Passion Red
      • Nine: Black
      • Ten: Magenta Pink
      • Eleven: (Return to Default)

Play ANOTHER Difficulty Charts

  • On the song select screen in HARD mode (does not work in BASIC mode), follow the steps below to play the ANOTHER chart of a song that has one.
  1. Highlight a song that has an ANOTHER chart.
  2. Select that song by simultaneously pressing 2+3+4.
  • Follow these steps if you are having trouble simultaneously pressing 2+3+4.
  1. Use the turntable to scroll the song selection screen.
  2. While the records are moving on screen, press and hold two of the three buttons (e.g. 2+4).
  3. Continue to hold the two buttons, then use the turntable to highlight the song you want to play.
  4. With the two buttons still held down, press the third button (e.g. 3) to select that song.

Event Mode

Selecting Options and Mode During Event Mode
  • When Event Mode is enabled, there are several differences in making selections, which are as follows.
    • Although the options menu is shown on the title screen, options cannot be selected from there.
    • The MODE SELECT menu is skipped, preventing selection of game mode and frame color.
    • Song selection is performed with the START button(s), instead of a white or black key button (1/2/3/4/5 or 6/7/8/9/10).
    • To make each selection, follow the procedures below on the song select screen.
  • Select Options
    • Only a Turntable option (RANDOM or MIRROR) can be selected (see Select Options); there is no known way to select any other options.
  • Select Mode
    • Press the following button(s).
      • 1P START: SINGLE
      • 2P START: DOUBLE
      • 1P+2P START: BATTLE
        • Two-player non-BATTLE mode (DOUBLE chart with two lifebars) cannot be specifically selected while in Event Mode.
