General Information / Changes
- First beatmania IIDX game to use a new design for the beatmania IIDX logo. This typeface is the same one that was used on the cover of the HAPPY SKY OST.
- With the exception of EMPRESS, every future arcade beatmania IIDX title would feature a unique logo.
- Interface is monochrome (blacks and greys) with an orange wireframe motif.
- In-song HI-SPEED changing is supported by holding down the Start button and pressing a white or black key.
- HI-SPEED 4.5 and 5.0 have been added.
- A new "DP FLIP" option has been added that swaps the 1P and 2P sides of the notechart during Double and two-player (non-Battle) play.
- The e-AMUSEMENT PASS is used as a replacement of Entry card.
- New song remixes no longer indicate the original artist for a song. Instead, the artist name for a song remix is "Remixed by (Artist Name)".
- The default song title font was changed again to Commador Wide Normal. It's still used to this day.
- First beatmania IIDX game since the introduction of EXTRA STAGE songs in beatmania IIDX 7th style not to have a default EXTRA STAGE or ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE song; instead there is the CARDINAL GATE system. The default EXTRA STAGE system would return come the next game, however.
- This is the last beatmania IIDX arcade game Tatsh completed his work as a sound director on. He would later be replaced by DJ Yoshitaka in beatmania IIDX 14 GOLD, who would hold on to the post for four more games.
- First of five consecutive beatmania IIDX titles where DJ Yoshitaka composed the system BGM.
- AA, D.A.N.C.E.!, Raspberry♡Heart (English version), and The Hope of Tomorrow all have unique videos now.
- The Kaiden (皆伝) rank course, above 10th Dan, has been added to Dan mode. Players are required to clear the aforementioned 10th Dan course; Single and Double courses have to be unlocked separately.
- Total songs: 414

CARDINAL GATE
Instead of using the EXTRA STAGE system introduced in 7th style, DistorteD instead uses a new EXTRA STAGE system titled CARDINAL GATE, which has four EXTRA STAGE exclusive songs inside its own folder. To access the CARDINAL GATE folder, you must do the following:
- Be playing with an e-AMUSEMENT PASS.
- Clear your first stage with a rating of B or higher.
- Also clear your second stage with a rating of B or higher, with the difficulty level equal to or greater than what you played for your first stage.
- Clear your final stage with an A rating or higher, along with meeting the normal EXTRA STAGE requirements.
- Note that you can use any modifiers you want on all three songs, including EASY gauge and modifiers that disqualify you from scoring.
If all conditions are met, the cursor will highlight the CARDINAL GATE folder on the EXTRA STAGE. The game will be locked into the folder once it is opened (a warning screen indicating songs of hard difficulty will be shown).
Inside the CARDINAL GATE folder, you will be given a selection of four songs, all referred to solely by their artists. Each song also has a unique frame used while playing it. Any difficulties can be played, though their conditions vary:
青龍
- Play at least two EXPERT courses under the same difficulty within a specific difficulty (depending on which difficulty you want to play waxing and wanding on).
- Since EXPERT courses have two difficulties available, playing HYPER will unlock both HYPER and ANOTHER charts.
- Hidden backside courses do not count.
- Obtain at least one Class rank, with at least a 4th Dan for HYPER and 8th Dan for ANOTHER.
朱雀
- Play at least 20 (NORMAL) or 30 (HYPER and ANOTHER) new DistorteD songs within a specific difficulty (depending on which difficulty you want to play CONTRACT on).
- In the case for Double ANOTHER, HYPER charts will also count towards the total (only 26 DistorteD songs have Double ANOTHER charts).
白虎
- Clear at least one song from each style within a specific difficulty (depending on which difficulty you want to play 華蝶風雪 on), with at least an EASY Clear and must have at least 1 EX Point.
玄武
- Obtain a BORDER/PERFECT CLEAR on one song within a specific difficulty (depending on which difficulty you want to play Ganymede on). Players are permitted to use any modifiers (except when unlocking on ANOTHER).
To access the ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE, you must obtain marks on all four songs. These can be obtained by clearing a song on ANOTHER with the HARD gauge with a rating of A or higher. Modifiers that disqualify you from scoring (i.e. RANDOM) cannot be used. Once marks have been obtained for all four songs, clearing a CARDINAL GATE song with the same criteria will let you play 嘆きの樹 as the ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE.
From beat#3 onwards, all the CARDINAL GATE songs are unlocked by default. The CARDINAL GATE folder can no longer be accessed through normal means, though you can still trigger it with the use of a code.
Note: waxing and wanding's Double ANOTHER chart is only available from beat#3.
