DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX
Release Information
- Release Date: March 27th, 2001.
General Information / Changes
- Introduces a new circular songwheel interface, replacing the jukebox-style interface of earlier entries.
- Song titles are now displayed on the right as rectangular boxes, with banners on the left side of the screen.
- BPM is displayed above the song banners, while difficulty ratings are displayed below them.
- Subtitles and artist names are shown in smaller fonts for each song.
- Songs are grouped by color on the songwheel:
- Yellow represents songs that have been unlocked.
- Green represents songs that are new to 5thMIX.
- Blue represents songs that made their debut on earlier DDR arcade mixes.
- All but 20 songs prior to 4thMIX have been removed.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to feature LONG VERSION songs.
- LONG VERSION songs can only be played on the penultimate stage of a credit. It counts as two songs when played.
- First mainline DanceDanceRevolution game to list BPM on the song select screen.
- Also the first game to list BPM changes and feature stops.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to introduce the AAA rating when achieving perfect full combo, instead of AA which was used in DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX and DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX PLUS.
- First and only DanceDanceRevolution game with a windowed demo loop to display the warning screen, KONAMI, and BEMANI logos, and Dancemania albums.
- The gameplay interface has been completely changed.
- The top and bottom parts of the screen are cropped to make room for score counters and a bar. This would continue until DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- When reaching 100 combos, the arrow flashes will appear brighter. This behavior would be used until SuperNOVA.
- Last mainline DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature dancing characters until the release of DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA.
- NONSTOP mode was removed.
- First mainline DanceDanceRevolution game to run at 60 frames per second. (Spinoff game Dancing Stage featuring TRUE KiSS DESTiNATiON first did in 1999.)
- Last DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to have the announcer used from the original DanceDanceRevolution title.
- Aside from CAN'T STOP FALLIN' IN LOVE ~SPEED MIX~, none of 5thMIX's licenses ever appeared in another Asian DanceDanceRevolution arcade release.
- Five of the game's KONAMI originals (DIVE, Radical Faith, THE CUBE, and long versions of B4U and DYNAMITE RAVE) have also never reappeared in another mainline Asian DanceDanceRevolution arcade release.
- With 23 exclusives, 5thMIX has the record for the largest amount of exclusive tracks of any Asian DanceDanceRevolution arcade release.
- Selecting difficulty during the song selection screen has returned, replacing the separate difficulty menu used in DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX.
- All of the game's song banners are taken from the respective song's in-game background.
- Songs from 5thMIX revived in later DanceDanceRevolution games would gain unique banners then, though.
- Song backgrounds for each song now always appear at the beginning and end of every song. This carried over to all future DanceDanceRevolution titles up to DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show play style indicator in song selection, stage result, and overall result of all stages.
- The songlist is now ordered by BASIC foot ratings, from easiest (Level 1) to hardest (Level 6).
- Songs with BASIC charts with a difficulty rating of 1 or 2 have a yellow and green V-shaped icon in the songwheel. This is the same mark used in Japan for beginner drivers.
- New songs: 40
- Total songs: 122
