There is a surprising number of young people in their teens or 20s today who love techno. In particular, the equality of "loves games = loves techno" seems to hold at quite a probability.<br>
In the demo tapes from people who apply to be a sound creator here at Konami, the quality of the techno is pretty good, but the other genres are, well... a lot of the people are like that, and often the screener holds their head in frustration. That said...<br>
Here is some advice to those of you who aim to be (professional) sound creators:<br>
Pursuing what you like is definitely great! But just doing that won't earn you a living. Love music across the board, and furthermore love sound (audio) across the board, be loved by it, and cherish it.
I got on a tangent there... or I got off-track, rather, but that's techno.<br>
The real-time experience I had with techno was with '80s techno-pop like YMO; in a low-brow sense, there was also techno house (it was awesome!) at the famous Juliana's Tokyo in the '90s... these days, though, techno has evolved and branched off considerably, and I can't describe it very well just in those terms.<br>
That's where I had our promising young sound designers at KCE JAPAN, Makimu- ("Techno-kun") and Mikki- ("Synth-pop-san"), select albums to recommend.
* ''Gorgeous'' / 808 State
** It's an old album, but it doesn't get old. Beautiful...!
* ''Jelly Tones'' / Ken Ishi
** The epitome (?) of Japanese techno creators. He has a lot of songs merged with anime; a lot of you may have heard them?
* ''Ghost In The Shell'' / Game Soundtrack
** So many well-known parts. A representative "techno + game" album... one of them.
* ''Berlin Trax'' / Takkyu Ishino
** It's weird with three people, but when there's only one (?), it gets serious.
There they are; if you're interested, try listening to them.
I'm going off-track again, but over at a hamburger steak restaurant in Atre Ebisu, I caught a glimpse of "Japan's Don of Techno" Harry Hosono. It was deeply moving to see him eat hamburger steak and rice rather ordinarily, just like the rest of us... (I mean, you're supposed to eat it.)
''Until next time, have a wonderful BEAT PLAY LIFE.''<br>
