* Rating system expanded on, from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see X difficulty changes list).
* First European DanceDanceRevolution arcade release to be named "DanceDanceRevolution" instead of "Dancing Stage".
* New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace the one used in the series since DDRMAX.
* Difficulty ratings have been expanded from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see the X difficulty changes list).
* The first arcade DanceDanceRevolution release to feature the music licensing deal with A Different Drum records, previously an exclusive to the DDR ULTRAMIX and UNIVERSE CS series.
* Much like DDRMAX did in 2001, X changed up a lot of things in the series:
** The AC licensing deal lasted for only 2 releases, as the songs were later removed in DanceDanceRevolution X3 VS 2ndMIX.
** New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace Londell "Taz" Hicks from DDRMAX.
* Shock Arrows introduced on some CHALLENGE charts. Songs with Shock Arrows in their CHALLENGE charts show an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down, just like a misstep would.
** The game now runs on BEMANI PC, running at 720p widescreen with HD graphics on new cabinets, though at the cost of bugginess (the American and European versions of X and its sequel run on modified Dell PCs instead).
* Scoring system is the same as that of SuperNOVA2, with some modifications:
** New arrows in the form of Shock Arrows; exclusive to CHALLENGE charts, they feature an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down like a misstep would.
**Step Score (SC): 1.000.000 ÷ (Number of steps [A jump will be considered a step in scoring] + Number of Freeze Arrows [A pair of Freeze Arrows that start and end at the same time will be considered as one Freeze in scoring] + Number of 4-way or 8-way Shock Arrows).
** CD designs for songs return for the first time since since DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX CS.
* Subtitles for every song are now merged with song titles at the right side.
** Characters can now dance to dedicated dance routines. Selected HOTTEST PARTY crossovers had their dance routines carried over, while selected X songs received new dance routines. For new songs without dedicated dance routines (excluding X-Specials), characters will dance a different choreography from the HOTTEST PARTY games depending on the maximum BPM of the song:
* DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME folder from DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2 has been separated to eight folders: 1stMIX until EXTREME. Unlike in DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME, each song is inside its respective folder where it made its arcade debut.
*** 131 to 159 BPM: escape or Closer to my Heart (jun remix).
*** 160 BPM or higher: I WANT YOUR LOVE (Darwin remix) or REACH THE SKY (Orbit1 remix).
** New mods added: nine new SPEED modifiers (x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5), SCREEN FILTER (to mask your play area, with the options of OFF, DARK, DARKER, and DARKEST), CUT modifier ON being renamed to ON1, with a new ON2 modifier that removes all non-4th/8th notes.
** Modifier text colors are now distinguishable in options: green for default, white for modified.
** Combos are now color-coded, based on judgements obtained during a song: white for all MARVELOUS, yellow for at least one PERFECT, and green for at least one GREAT.
** Getting a FULL COMBO will now produce a laser-beam splash effect, with the color based on the combo color attained.
** Obtaining an N.G. from a Freeze Arrow or a set of Shock Arrows now breaks your combo.
** Many charts were adjusted to use proper triplets (12th, 24th, and 48th notes), instead of rounding them to the nearest 64th note.
* Scoring system is similar to SuperNOVA2's, with some modifications:
**Step Score (SC): 1.000.000 ÷ (Number of steps [A jump will be considered a step in scoring] + Number of Freeze Arrows [A pair of Freeze Arrows that start at the same time will be considered as one Freeze in scoring] + Number of 4-way or 8-way Shock Arrows).
* Options can now be set on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.
* The EXTREME folder from SuperNOVA2 is now separated into eight folders: 1stMIX→EXTREME.
** Unlike in EXTREME, each song is inside its respective folder where it made its arcade debut.
* First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature songs from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
* First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature songs from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
** Only DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature background dance stages from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
* First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature licenses from A Different Drum records, which were previously exclusive to the Xbox series DanceDanceRevolution games.
** Also, first DanceDanceRevolution game released in Japan to feature licenses from A Different Drum.
* The BOOM BOOM BOOM stage background now features a slightly different background from the one used in the CS releases. This would carry over to every subsequent installment.
* BOOM DARK, a darker variant of the BOOM BOOM BOOM stage, is introduced in this installment. It did not appear in the CS releases.
* A third cut-in type is introduced; a different portrait of the player's selected character that appears when the player is halfway through the song and again when the player is 90% done with the song.
* All PARANOiA and TRIP MACHINE songs' banners had their fonts changed.
** However, TRIP MACHINE PhoeniX's English banner remained unaltered in the North American/European release.
* First and only game with Xmix songs, double-length songs consisting of medleys of songs from DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2; playing an Xmix song takes two non-Xmix stages. They appear on the penultimate STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.
* To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DanceDanceRevolution franchise, several old Dancemania licenses are revived with new charts and cuts. These are known as X-edits.
* To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DanceDanceRevolution franchise, several old Dancemania licenses are revived with new charts and cuts. These are known as X-edits.
** New CHALLENGE-only charts named X-Specials are added for several old KONAMI original DanceDanceRevolution songs, though they show up as separate songs in the song list.

* First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game since the series' beginning to not have NAOKI or jun as the sound director; instead, it's the late Jason Michael "Stillwind" Borenstein, best known for his work in the ULTRAMIX/UNIVERSE series.
* First arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to:
* This release retired the Python 2 hardware used since SuperNOVA and replaced it with PC-based hardware (BEMANI PC). This improved the graphics quality of the game on all cabinets, and allowed 720p widescreen HD graphics on new cabinets, but also meant that the game was slightly buggier than its predecessors due to migration issues.
** Not involve NAOKI or jun as the sound director; instead, it's the late Jason Michael "Stillwind" Borenstein, best known for his work in the ULTRAMIX/UNIVERSE series.
* First DanceDanceRevolution game to provide an extra second after the countdown timer is over to give the player a chance to press down Start button for options.

* First DanceDanceRevolution game to play back the sample of a selected song almost in an instant after selecting from previous or next song.
** Play back a sample of a selected song almost instantly after selecting from the previous/next song.
* First DanceDanceRevolution game to play back a random announcer message if 20 seconds of the countdown timer remains.
** Play back a random announcer message when 20 seconds remain on the countdown timer.
* First DanceDanceRevolution game to give 10 seconds (instead of 5 seconds as in SuperNOVA2) of the countdown timer remaining with accompanying warning sound.
** Give a 10 second warning (instead of 5 as in SuperNOVA2) when low on time on music select.
* Several modifiers were added or modified:
** To have music playing on the results screen.
** New SPEED modifiers have been introduced: x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5.
** Show stars throwing beyond the stepping zone for MARVELOUS timing (this was also used in the sequel).
** SCREEN FILTER modifier has been introduced, with choices of OFF, DARK, DARKER, and DARKEST.
** Include USB ports for importing edit data of certain available songs, as well as shown an icon for Edit on the upper right hand corner of the title screen.
** CUT modifier ON was renamed as ON1, and an ON2 modifier was added.
** Show a difference of scores between the current player and the player that attained machine-specific high scores under stepping judgment during game play.
** Color of text of modifiers are now distinguishable from the menu of options: Green for default, white for modified.
** Have TRAINING MODE before the game begins, which only appears on the first stage. Once enabled, it cannot be disabled; this feature was not carried to X2.
* Number of combos are now color-coded. They will be based from the last fragment of combos. White for all MARVELOUS, yellow for MARVELOUS and PERFECT only, and green for MARVELOUS, PERFECT, and GREAT only.
*** If the selected song has a BEGINNER chart, that will be used. Otherwise, option CUT is set to ON1. This was used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
* Obtaining an N.G. from a Freeze Arrow or a set of Shock Arrows will break the combo.

* Only DanceDanceRevolution game that can select unavailable and nonexistent difficulties.
** Courses either use the traditional Life Gauge or a Battery system (eight on NORMAL, four on DIFFICULT), depending on how many stages are in the course. This setting was used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
** Example 1: The song list is sorted by series title on EXTRA STAGE. The song On The Break is highlighted and the difficulty EXPERT is selected. Thee only available difficulty for the song SABER WING is EXPERT. Switching difficulty from EXPERT to DIFFICULT and switching to the next song will select the unavailable difficulty for SABER WING. Proceeding with this condition will use SABER WING's DIFFICULT chart.
** Courses are categorized as: CONCEPT, RANKING (both being Internet Ranking courses), DANCE DRILL (Class mode-esque courses), and WEEKLY (player submitted courses).
** Example 2: The song list is sorted by ABC on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. The song Dance Dance Revolution is highlighted and the difficulty CHALLENGE is selected. The only difficulty for the song Dance Dance Revolution(X-Special) is CHALLENGE. Switching difficulty from CHALLENGE to EXPERT and switching to the next song will select the nonexistent difficulty for Dance Dance Revolution(X-Special). Proceeding with this condition will result in rebooting of the game after 15 to 45 seconds of no response from the game.
** All Internet Ranking courses have two difficulties. DANCE DRILL and WEEKLY courses only have one difficulty.
*** Exception from Example 2: The song list is sorted by series title on 1st STAGE. The song SABER WING is highlighted and the difficulty EXPERT is selected. Switching difficulty from EXPERT to CHALLENGE and switching to the previous song will select the nonexistent difficulty for On The Break. Proceeding with this condition will use On The Break's EXPERT chart.

EXTRA STAGE
Requirements for obtaining EXTRA STAGE are identical to DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2; please see its page for more details.

To access EXTRA STAGE, the song played on FINAL STAGE has to be either On The Break or a song on RANDOM on any difficulty by obtaining at least an AA.

To access On The Break for FINAL STAGE, all songs prior must be cleared with at least an A on any difficulty (getting a AA will automatically make all difficulties available).
* If playing on BEGINNER, you must also obtain a FULL COMBO.
* Playing a CHALLENGE chart with a A only unlocks EXPERT difficulty.
* If playing on BATTLE, the CPU level must be at least two stars upon reaching FINAL STAGE.
* If playing Xmix songs, getting A will satisfy FINAL STAGE requirements automatically.

Clearing FINAL STAGE with a score between 950,000 and 962,490 gives the player two battery lives on EXTRA STAGE, between 962,500 and 974,990 gives three, and 975,000 or higher gives four. This is one more battery life compared to SuperNOVA2.

All songs new to DanceDanceRevolution X (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) were unlocked for normal play on October 1st, 2009, and its EXTRA STAGE system is still accessible.

SABER WING and its remix SABER WING (AKIRA ISHIHARA Headshot mix) are the only songs available by default during EXTRA STAGE, provided that the player accumulate the following foot ratings leading up to the EXTRA STAGE:

|-
| 3 || 1 (3 x 0 + 1) || 19 (3 x 6 + 1) || 28 (3 x 9 + 1) || 40 (3 x 13 + 1) || 53 (4 x 13 + 1)

|}

Clearing either EXTRA STAGE song with at least an AA will grant access to ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. Clearing SABER WING will unlock Horatio for the ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, while playing its remix will get on the bounce or Trigger (providing if the player fulfills Foot Rating requirements above).

On The Break was unlocked for normal play on April 9th, 2009, followed by SABER WING and its remix on May 21st, 2009, Horatio on July 2nd, 2009, on the bounce on August 13th, 2009, and Trigger on September 17th, 2009.

X-Special Charts
Added on February 12th, 2009, X-Special Charts are special CHALLENGE-only charts for older DanceDanceRevolution songs from the first game through EXTREME. Each game consist of two songs where they are previously boss songs (in the case of DDRMAX through EXTREME, EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA songs). These songs appear in their respective folders upon their appearance. Clearing the respective X-Special song with at least an AA grade will access the corresponding version's ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.

The other seven set of songs were added on March 16th, 2009 and all of these songs (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) were unlocked for regular play on October 1st, 2009. Like EXTRA Stage songs, these songs require a clear with at least an AA grade or better before reaching FINAL STAGE. To
access these charts, these requirements are as follows:

Xmix
The following songs are medleys of several DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2 songs. Much like the DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX Long Version songs, playing an Xmix takes two non-Xmix stages. None of the Xmixes have BEGINNER or CHALLENGE charts. They appear on second to the FINAL STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.

Unlockable Songs
FINAL / EXTRA STAGE / ENCORE EXTRA STAGE
To be updated.

X-Special Charts
Exclusive to the arcade version of DanceDanceRevolution X are X-Special Charts, which are old DanceDanceRevolution original songs with brand-new, CHALLENGE-exclusive charts. These charts are initially only playable on the EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA STAGEs. Each mix consists of two songs: an EXTRA STAGE and an ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. There are 8 sets of songs from the first game through EXTREME (in the case of DDRMAX through EXTREME, the EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA STAGEs are in the same pattern as the original games' songs). These charts are all listed under the DanceDanceRevolution X category, despite being old songs.

The first set of stages (for the 1st game) were added on February 12th, 2009. The other songs were added to DanceDanceRevolution X on March 16th, 2009, but were not unlocked until much later. To unlock the X-Special charts, the player must complete certain requirements for the FINAL STAGE, usually relating to the mix of origin of the song set. All the X-Special charts were unlocked for normal play on October 1st, 2009 (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette (X-Special)).

Unlock Schedule
All the X-Special songs require special conditions in order to make them appears. Even when unlocked for normal play, the songs below can still be played using the EXTRA STAGE system.

Release Information

General Information / Changes

  • First European DanceDanceRevolution arcade release to be named "DanceDanceRevolution" instead of "Dancing Stage".
  • Difficulty ratings have been expanded from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see the DanceDanceRevolution X difficulty changes list).
  • Much like DDRMAX did in 2001, X changed up a lot of things in the series:
    • New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace Londell "Taz" Hicks from DDRMAX.
    • The game now runs on BEMANI PC, running at 720p widescreen with HD graphics on new cabinets, though at the cost of bugginess (the American and European versions of X and its sequel run on modified Dell PCs instead).
    • New arrows in the form of Shock Arrows; exclusive to CHALLENGE charts, they feature an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down like a misstep would.
    • CD designs for songs return for the first time since since DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX CS.
    • Characters can now dance to dedicated dance routines.
    • New mods added: nine new SPEED modifiers (x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5), SCREEN FILTER (to mask your play area, with the options of OFF, DARK, DARKER, and DARKEST), CUT modifier ON being renamed to ON1, with a new ON2 modifier that removes all non-4th/8th notes.
    • Modifier text colors are now distinguishable in options: green for default, white for modified.
    • Combos are now color-coded, based on judgements obtained during a song: white for all MARVELOUS, yellow for at least one PERFECT, and green for at least one GREAT.
    • Getting a FULL COMBO will now produce a laser-beam splash effect, with the color based on the combo color attained.
    • Obtaining an N.G. from a Freeze Arrow or a set of Shock Arrows now breaks your combo.
    • Many charts were adjusted to use proper triplets (12th, 24th, and 48th notes), instead of rounding them to the nearest 64th note.
  • Scoring system is similar to SuperNOVA2's, with some modifications:
    • Step Score (SC): 1.000.000 ÷ (Number of steps [A jump will be considered a step in scoring] + Number of Freeze Arrows [A pair of Freeze Arrows that start at the same time will be considered as one Freeze in scoring] + Number of 4-way or 8-way Shock Arrows).
  • Options can now be set on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.
  • The EXTREME folder from SuperNOVA2 is now separated into eight folders: 1stMIX→EXTREME.
    • Unlike in EXTREME, each song is inside its respective folder where it made its arcade debut.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature songs from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
    • Only DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature background dance stages from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature licenses from A Different Drum records, which were previously exclusive to the Xbox series DanceDanceRevolution games.
    • Also, first DanceDanceRevolution game released in Japan to feature licenses from A Different Drum.
  • The BOOM BOOM BOOM stage background now features a slightly different background from the one used in the CS releases. This would carry over to every subsequent installment.
  • BOOM DARK, a darker variant of the BOOM BOOM BOOM stage, is introduced in this installment. It did not appear in the CS releases.
  • A third cut-in type is introduced; a different portrait of the player's selected character that appears when the player is halfway through the song and again when the player is 90% done with the song.
  • All PARANOiA and TRIP MACHINE songs' banners had their fonts changed.
    • However, TRIP MACHINE PhoeniX's English banner remained unaltered in the North American/European release.
  • First and only game with Xmix songs, double-length songs consisting of medleys of songs from DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2; playing an Xmix song takes two non-Xmix stages. They appear on the penultimate STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.
  • To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DanceDanceRevolution franchise, several old Dancemania licenses are revived with new charts and cuts. These are known as X-edits.
    • New CHALLENGE-only charts named X-Specials are added for several old KONAMI original DanceDanceRevolution songs, though they show up as separate songs in the song list.
  • System BGM composed by Drew Campbell.
  • First arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to:
    • Not involve NAOKI or jun as the sound director; instead, it's the late Jason Michael "Stillwind" Borenstein, best known for his work in the ULTRAMIX/UNIVERSE series.
    • Provide an extra second after the countdown timer is over to give the player a chance to choose option.
    • Play back a sample of a selected song almost instantly after selecting from the previous/next song.
    • Play back a random announcer message when 20 seconds remain on the countdown timer.
    • Give a 10 second warning (instead of 5 as in SuperNOVA2) when low on time on music select.
    • To have music playing on the results screen.
    • Show stars throwing beyond the stepping zone for MARVELOUS timing (this was also used in the sequel).
    • Include USB ports for importing edit data of certain available songs, as well as shown an icon for Edit on the upper right hand corner of the title screen.
    • Show a difference of scores between the current player and the player that attained machine-specific high scores under stepping judgment during game play.
    • Have TRAINING MODE before the game begins, which only appears on the first stage. Once enabled, it cannot be disabled; this feature was not carried to X2.
      • If the selected song has a BEGINNER chart, that will be used. Otherwise, option CUT is set to ON1. This was used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
  • Last arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to:
    • Use song banners.
    • Use the songwheel interface used since 5thMIX.
    • Feature BATTLE as a game mode.
    • Show a message about Freeze Arrows before the game begins.
  • The overall stage results screen was revised.
    • Only DanceDanceRevolution game that can stop the countdown timer on the overall stage results screen.
    • Any FULL COMBOs obtained during the game now display at the end of a game.
  • NONSTOP and CHALLENGE modes have been merged into COURSE mode, with some changes:
    • Courses either use the traditional Life Gauge or a Battery system (eight on NORMAL, four on DIFFICULT), depending on how many stages are in the course. This setting was used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
    • Courses are categorized as: CONCEPT, RANKING (both being Internet Ranking courses), DANCE DRILL (Class mode-esque courses), and WEEKLY (player submitted courses).
    • All Internet Ranking courses have two difficulties. DANCE DRILL and WEEKLY courses only have one difficulty.
  • e-AMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution X was advertised for North America [1], but it was never available for the game on that region.
  • Color labeling for songs has changed since SuperNOVA2:
    • yellow: new licenses and contest songs.
    • blue: new KONAMI originals / BEMANI crossovers.
    • purple: "X-mix" songs.
    • red: current EXTRA STAGE and ENCORE EXTRA STAGE songs.
    • white: older songs.
      • In X's location test, new songs were simply all yellow, and all older songs white.
  • eAMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution X ended on August 31st, 2010.
  • Total songs: 392 (Asia), 388 (North America/Europe)

  • If playing on BEGINNER, you must also obtain a FULL COMBO.
  • Playing a CHALLENGE chart with a A only unlocks EXPERT difficulty.
  • If playing on BATTLE, the CPU level must be at least two stars upon reaching FINAL STAGE.
  • If playing Xmix songs, getting A will satisfy FINAL STAGE requirements automatically.

Number of stages
(1st STAGE to FINAL STAGE)
BEGINNER BASIC DIFFICULT EXPERT Accessing Trigger
2 1 (2 x 0 + 1) 13 (2 x 6 + 1) 19 (2 x 9 + 1) 27 (2 x 13 + 1) 40 (3 x 13 + 1)
3 1 (3 x 0 + 1) 19 (3 x 6 + 1) 28 (3 x 9 + 1) 40 (3 x 13 + 1) 53 (4 x 13 + 1)
4 1 (4 x 0 + 1) 25 (4 x 6 + 1) 37 (4 x 9 + 1) 53 (4 x 13 + 1) 66 (5 x 13 + 1)
5 1 (5 x 0 + 1) 31 (5 x 6 + 1) 45 (5 x 9 + 1) 66 (5 x 13 + 1) 79 (6 x 13 + 1)

To access these charts, these requirements are as follows:
