* | == General Information / Changes ==
* | * First pop'n music game to have a main theme that ties in to the layout of the whole game. In this case, it's springtime.
* | * First pop'n music game with the BEAT modifier, which makes the keys looks like the ones from the beatmania series.
* | * First pop'n music arcade game with the SUDDEN modifier, in which the popkuns don't show up until right before you have to hit them.
* | * First pop'n music game in Challenge Mode in which you pick your ojamas after you choose your song, as opposed to before. This has since been consistent in the franchise.
* First pop'n music game with a HELL course made up entirely of EXs.
* First pop'n music game with extensive usage of BEMANI crossovers. Up until now, only beatmania and pop'n stage songs got ported over to the pop'n music series, for the most part.
** Only the pop'n stage songs have their artists credited. The reason for this is unknown.
* First arcade pop'n music game since pop'n music 3 to have master recording licenses, as opposed to only covers like the last two games' sets of licenses.
* Last pop'n music game to limit songs exclusively to stage number in NORMAL MODE.
* Battle Mode upgraded with HYPER charts. Songs from pop'n music 6 and pop'n music 7 have their old charts moved to HYPER difficulty, while newer, simpler ones are used for NORMAL difficulty.
* On the pop'n music 8 Q&A (archived), sound director wac broke down the percentage of charts made by the staff members for pop'n music 8:
** wac: 36% | |||
** Seiya Murai: 15% | |||
** ucchie: 15% | |||
** pure: 8% | |||
** saito: 6% | |||
** Other composers and their notecharts: 20%
* With the three exceptions of Midnight Yoghurt(女SPY☆お色気ゴーゴー脱出大作戦), Spell on me ~魅惑の呪文, and 大見解, all 22 KONAMI originals from pop'n music 6 have been removed.
* Curiously, neither the game or soundtrack for the game lists a sound director. However, the official website does list wac as the sound director.
* System BGM is composed by Tomoyuki Uchida .
* Total songs: 122 | |||

= Sugoroku de 8 (すごろく de 8) =
Sugoroku de 8 is pop'n music 8's unlock event. It began on July 17th, 2002.
Before a round of play, you will be given a requirement to play during that game depending on which mode you play (such as a specific score requirement, or play a song with BEAT-POP). If you successfully fulfill that requirement during a round of play, you'll unlock at the end of the round the chance to play Sugoroku de 8. After your round ends, a number wheel appears, which will automatically land on a number from 1 to 6. pop'n music character KRAFT will then move that many spaces across a map of Japan.
Reaching a city may unlock a song, course, or character. On your first trip around Japan for each week, you must land exactly on the city to receive a song/course/character, or else you will not get anything. Once you go around Japan the second time, you will receive the missing song/course just by passing through. The event ends once you unlock 100% of the unlocks. The order you visit the cities are as follows:
* | * Tokyo (東京)→Shizuoka(静岡)→Nagoya(名古屋)→Osaka(大阪)→Kobe(神戸)→Kochi(高知)→Hiroshima(広島)→Kagoshima(鹿児島)→Shimonoseki(下関)→Tottori(鳥取)→Kanazawa(金沢)→Niigata(新潟)→Aomori(青森)→Sapporo(札幌)→Abashiri(網走)→Hakodate(函館)→Sendai(仙台)→Mito(水戸)
Sugoroku de 8 ended on August 28th, 2002.
Unlocks are listed in order.
NOTE: You start the first lap in Tokyo, so you cannot get CANDY POP until your second lap around.
