Editing the sidebar tutorial
If you need assistance in editing the sidebar, please feel free to contact User:Phuzion who will be more than happy to help you with the process.
The tl;dr of editing the MediaWiki Sidebar is as follows:
- The variable for the destination (the part that typically ends in "-url") is all in the MediaWiki namespace. For example, recentchanges-url is MediaWiki:recentchanges-url.
- When creating a new variable, be sure to do so in the proper namespace. Pages in the main namespace will not properly work for the sidebar. If the interface says "Message" at the top (where it typically says Page), you're in the correct namespace.
- The entire text of a variable should be ONLY the name of the page you want to redirect to. This is an example of a good variable. These are variables, not redirects or wikilinks. Do not put #REDIRECT in the variable, nor should you [[put wikilink formatting]] on the variable. The sidebar handles the conversion to a proper link for you.
- When adding the variable link to the sidebar, the format is as follows: * variable-url|Hyperlink text The variable url is the part you created in the MediaWiki namespace. Do not include "MediaWiki:" in the variable name. The hyperlink text is the text that will show on the sidebar.
Again, if you are unsure about how any of this works, ask me on discord, and I'll be happy to help out. Phuzion (talk) 19:37, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
