When you say "rock," there's all different kinds. In the same way, the genre of soul is also incredibly broad.
From the Southern soul, Philadelphia soul, and Motown of long ago, to the black contemporary, funk, and others that continue to the present day.
But in general, when people say "soul," they're often referring to black musicians from the '60s and '70s like James Brown or Otis Redding.
In the past, The Tunnels had a segment on their show called "Soul Tunnels"; the sound was just like that... to the current generation of old men and women in their late 30s or early 40s who were up to no good back in those days, that sweet sound makes them recall the long-lost days of their youth!
I'm a little younger than that generation, but back when I was in high school, I remember seeing men with afros and women in garish makeup all dancing with the same movements over in Yokohama at what is now called a "cluv" (the accent's on the "v" isn't it...?), back when it was still called a "discotheque" (did you know that!?).
We were still too young to step in, only able to catch mere glimpses of stylishly seductive adults having fun.
[Hiroshi] Takeyasu, who composed the soul track LOVE SO GROOVY for beatmania, is in the same age group as me. When I hear that great song LOVE SO GROOVY, it feels like it expresses the envy and longing from our generation at not being able to spend our youth in such an amazing era.
By the way, the musical mood that LOVE SO GROOVY has can be heard in female vocal groups like The Three Degrees (referred to as "Philadelphia soul") and The Supremes (referred to as "Motown sound"). Those of you who are drawn in by that kind of sound, give them a listen!
''Until next time, have a wonderful BEAT PLAY LIFE.''
