"Drum'n bass... what the heck is that? A bass drum? A percussive bass instrument!?"
Back when the genre name "drum'n bass" emerged, I was completely clueless. Being the old coelacanth I am, I asked one of my junior colleagues who's into new things about what it is. "Hmmm, right... I'll give it a listen."
... I'm already too stubborn to chase after popular things or new trends, though; all I really want to do is relax, listen to some Okinawan folk music or Hawaiian music, and drink beer or something while watching the sunset. But it's my job, so I gotta listen to it. And with that, I whipped my old body into shape (not S&M) and ran down to the CD rental shop (cheap-ass).
That preface was long, but here are the characteristics in terms of sound...
* Takes sampled breakbeats (see VOL. 1 for more details), chops them up even more, then edits them and creates complex rhythm patterns.
* A low bass sound that buzzes (what an awkward expression) to the point where the pitch feels low.
In dance music up until now, the bass drum plays the lowest sound, and the sound of the bass goes on top of it, which is your typical sound image, but for drum'n bass it's the opposite, where the bass supporting the very bottom, which is quite strange... it turns into an unconventional and unusual sound image...
(If I start writing too much in-depth, it'll be like an article in a sound specialist magazine, so I'll omit the details.)
The DRUM'N BASS MIX song in beatmania, Deep Clear Eyes, is cool!
It's one of my favorite songs.
If you asked me to recommend other songs with a drum'n bass sound, I wouldn't know because I'm not studious about in-depth stuff (I'm stubborn, remember?).
The only thing I can recommend with confidence is an album called ''Rough and Ready'' (1997) by the artist Ram Jam World.
Do you know Hirofumi Asamoto? He's also the producer of UA (pronounced "ooh-ah").
It stylishly incorporates elements of drum'n bass, but I think it's a top-notch "pop album" (has universal appeal). Give it a listen!
''Until next time, have a wonderful BEAT PLAY LIFE.''
