Like previous EXTRA STAGE systems in beatmania IIDX, the sum of difficulty levels, DJ LEVEL, and clear type are the main requirements to unlock a IIDX AIR RACE song for EXTRA STAGE. All the charts are playable from the first day of a IIDX AIR RACE song's appearance. RANDOM cannot be used.

AIR RACE songs are separated in groups. Within a group, a new EXTRA STAGE song appears every 5 weeks. A group consists of three EXTRA STAGE songs plus an ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE. Once the third EXTRA STAGE song appears, it is possible to unlock the group's songs for regular play by clearing their charts (with HARD CLEAR, CLEAR, EASY CLEAR or ASSIST CLEAR gauges, depending on the respective phase).
