EXAM Mode (検定モード) is a course-based mode in ノスタルジア where players play a set of three songs consecutively. EXAM has two types of courses: Grade and Event. Grade courses are a series of courses ranked so that each course is harder than the last. The difficulty level of the highest Grade course cleared is often used as an indicator of the overall strength of the player. Event courses function similarities to EXPERT/Nonstop Mode courses with a hidden song unlocked for regular play upon clearing the course.

You must pay an amount of nos upon attempting the course, and none of the songs are guaranteed in this mode. When playing a course, you will be shown on how many points you must accumulate up till completing the song. At any point the score target is not met, the game ends and you'll fail the course. These targets will be indicated in parenthesis.

Not all Grade courses are available from the get-go. In order to access it, you must accumulate a certain amount of Grade points (Grd.); to be promoted to a certain rank, you must also pass the course. Grades for Basic and Recital play styles are separate.
