Unless otherwise specified, the information on this page primarily pertains to the Japanese CS beatmania games for the PlayStation.

KEY DISCS and APPEND DISCS

  • For definitions of KEY DISC and APPEND DISC, see the respective pages.
  • You can start any beatmania KEY DISC game individually, and can swap to either a beatmania APPEND DISC or to beatmania CS via the in-game DISC CHANGE menu.
  • To play a beatmania APPEND DISC game, you must first start a KEY DISC game, then swap to the APPEND DISC via the KEY DISC's in-game DISC CHANGE menu.
  • Some beatmania APPEND DISC games also have a BONUS EDIT mode that can be accessed through a certain disc change order; those games are listed below with an asterisk (*) next to them.

Save File Info

The following games each have an individual save file:

The following games share a save file with beatmania CS, but only one of them can do so at a time on a single memory card:

BONUS EDIT Mode

This is a mode that is available in certain beatmania APPEND DISC games.

  • The mode lets you play additional songs in the same engine as the one used for beatmania CS through APPEND GOTTAMIX.
  • All songs from BONUS EDIT mode are also playable in the respective game's engine after unlocking them.

List of Bonus Edit Games

How to Access BONUS EDIT Mode

To access BONUS EDIT mode, use the DISC CHANGE option on the main menu to swap between the following discs, in the order listed below:

  1. beatmania CS
  2. APPEND 3rdMIX (not mini) or APPEND GOTTAMIX
  3. Game with BONUS EDIT
    1. beatmania APPEND 4thMIX 〜the beat goes on〜
    2. beatmania APPEND 5thMIX -Time to get down-
    3. beatmania APPEND GOTTAMIX2 ~Going Global~
    4. beatmania APPEND ClubMIX
  • To indicate that BONUS EDIT is enabled, the screen will show the words Bonus Edit.
  • Even after BONUS EDIT is enabled, you can still use the DISC CHANGE option to freely swap between beatmania CS and any other APPEND DISC.
    • However, BONUS EDIT will remain enabled for the applicable games. To swap to the regular game, you must reset the console and then swap to that APPEND DISC from a KEY DISC.

Controller Setting and Key Config

When you first start the game, it asks you to select between the NORMAL or ORIGINAL setting for each controller. You can change this setting at any time in the options menu, under GAME OPTION > CONTROLLER (1P/2P).

  • NORMAL is intended for use with PlayStation controllers.
    • If NORMAL is selected, you can view the currently selected layout, select another layout, or assign which buttons correspond to which keys or scratch direction in-game, under KEY CONFIG.
  • ORIGINAL is intended for use with official beatmania (and IIDX later) controllers.
    • If ORIGINAL is selected, a specific layout is selected and you cannot view or change it in KEY CONFIG.
    • During gameplay, there will be a delay of 2 frames (~33.3 ms) for detecting each scratch input; there is no way to remove this delay, other than to switch to the NORMAL setting.
    • beatmania 6thMIX + CORE REMIX uniquely allows you to additionally specify ORIGINAL 5KEYS or ORIGINAL 7KEYS in the options menu.
      • If you select ORIGINAL 7KEYS, it will ask you to select between RIGHT POSITION (rightmost five keys) and LEFT POSITION (leftmost five keys).

Left L1, L2 Square R1, R2 X Triangle Circle

* Is also the default layout in NORMAL mode for all games except APPEND GOTTAMIX 2 and 6thMIX + CORE REMIX.

  • APPEND GOTTAMIX 2: Almost identical to layout A, except nothing is assigned to Scratch Down. Selecting layout A in the menu will assign all keys and scratch directions, including Scratch Down, to the normal layout A button assignments.
  • 6thMIX + CORE REMIX: Does not differentiate between Scratch Up and Scratch Down in-game. L2 and L2 are assigned to scratch, instead of to keys. All other assignments identical to layout A.

Effect Settings

Almost all of the Japanese PlayStation CS games (except for beatmania 6thMIX + CORE REMIX) have audio effect settings, in the EFFECT menu on the options screen. You can enable the audio effect by pressing SELECT during gameplay. The default setting is STUDIO M.

  • EFFECT TYPE

* Some songs may have a scroll speed multiplier applied to them by default when playing certain charts.

  • In other words, on such charts, the in-game BPM is higher than the displayed BPM, and thus the chart scrolls faster than the displayed BPM would imply.
  • When a HI-SPEED option is used on such a chart, that HI-SPEED's multiplier will stack (multiply) with that chart's default scroll speed multiplier.
  • A specific list of affected songs and charts is not yet available for the CS games, but is available for the AC games.

Undocumented Features in Certain Games

Certain earlier games allow you to enable Autoplay or quit a song before it has ended, both of which are undocumented features that can be unlocked via a specific DISC CHANGE order.

How to Enable

Autoplay

  • At any time during a song, press and then release START to turn on Autoplay. Press START and release again at any time to turn off Autoplay.
    • Autoplay is available for all game modes (GAME START, TRAINING, and FREE) and will remain enabled between songs in GAME START and FREE modes until the player goes back to the title screen.

Quit Mid-Song

  • At any time during a song, press both START and SELECT to quit the song and jump to the results screen.
    • This command is available in GAME START and FREE modes.
    • Be aware that using this command causes a bug where incorrect audio is played during sounds and music.
      • However, the effects of this bug disappear when the player either returns to the title screen or plays a song.

Known Bugs

beatmania CS through APPEND GOTTAMIX

Incorrect audio after quitting mid-song
  • If you use the undocumented quit mid-song feature, incorrect audio will be played from then on whenever a sound or music is played.
    • More specifically, sound or music that is currently loaded into memory will be used in place of what is supposed to be loaded.
  • You can recover from this bug by returning to the title screen or playing a song.

beatmania CS, APPEND 3rdMIX, and beatmania APPEND 4thMIX 〜the beat goes on〜 Bonus Edit

Opposite song title in TRAINING mode

The bug described here affects the following songs that have different Single/Double titles, when playing them in TRAINING mode.

If you follow the steps below, the Double title initially appears, but is then replaced by the Single title as soon as the song starts in NORMAL PLAY (AUTO PLAY is unaffected).

  1. Set PLAY SELECT to NORMAL PLAY.
  2. Set NORMAL PLAY OPTION to either 1P&2P, 1P&CPU, or CPU&2P.
  3. Pick START to go to the gameplay screen.

The cause is a mismatch between the PLAYER option in NORMAL PLAY and TRAINING. To get Double titles to display, you will need to set PLAY SELECT to TRAINING, then in TRAINING OPTION, set PLAYER to either 1P&2P, 1P&CPU, or CPU&2P.

Conversely, if you follow the steps below, the Single title initially appears, but is then replaced by the Double title as soon as the song starts in NORMAL PLAY (AUTO PLAY is unaffected).

  1. Set PLAY SELECT to TRAINING.
  2. Set TRAINING OPTION to either 1P&2P, 1P&CPU, or CPU&2P.
  3. Set PLAY SELECT to NORMAL PLAY.
  4. Set PLAY SELECT to 1P.
  5. Pick START to go to the gameplay screen.

Again, the cause is a mismatch between the PLAYER option in NORMAL PLAY and TRAINING. To get Single titles to display, you will need to set PLAY SELECT to TRAINING, then in TRAINING OPTION, set PLAYER to 1P.

beatmania for WonderSwan

Inaccurate total note count on results screen
  • Most AC and CS beatmania games base the results screen's total note count on the number of notes in the chart you just played.
  • However, this game bases the total note count on the sum of each judgment count.
    • This means if you hit extra notes during a song and get extra POORs, those extra POORs will be factored into the total note count, which may be higher than the number of actual notes in the song.
