The information on this page reflect the content found in most of the arcade versions. For more specific details on a particular version, see the individual arcade releases found here.

General Arcade Gameplay

To start a game, the user have to either press the Start button or insert a mode of payment. The following screens will then be encountered during a regular game:

  • Entry screen: Insertion of a valid mode of payment such as credits, coins or a eAMUSEMENT card with PASELI points.
  • Select Style screen: Selecting a gameplay style from the 3 available which include 2 single player mode and a two players mode.
    • For versions prior to DanceDanceRevolution 2013, the following screens were available:
      • Difficulty screen: The choice of difficulty for the game had to be chosen at this point.
      • Select Mode: Selecting from one of the two modes: music play or course mode. In Course Mode, Select Course replaced Select Music as the next screen.
  • Select Music: Choosing the song(s) that are going to be played.
    • In DDRMAX or later, you can hold Start when you select a song to enter modifiers. In earlier versions, you must use codes.
  • Result screen: After play, your score will be evaluated, and you will be returned to Select Music if there's still more stages to play.
    • In Course Mode, the Result Screen was shown after the end of the course instead.
  • Total Results: When the game is done, a final evaluation is performed. In the older versions, under certain circumstances, you could enter your name.

Cabinet

A DanceDanceRevolution arcade machine consists of two parts, the cabinet and the dance platform.

Unlike most BEMANI series, DanceDanceRevolution has dedicated menu buttons. All DanceDanceRevolution cabinets have at least left, right, and start menu buttons. Cabinets that were sold with DanceDanceRevolution X or later also have up and down menu buttons. The directional menu buttons are used to navigate menus, and the Start (green) button to make selections. Cabinets with eAMUSEMENT support also include a numeric pad with the following numbers: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

eAMUSEMENT & PASELI

eAMUSEMENT is KONAMI online service used to keep all the player play data such as the scores, rivals and unlock achievements between all of their games. It was introduced in DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA and is now found in every versions after that.

eAMUSEMENT functions:

  • My Groove Radar (Myグルーヴレーダー): keep track of the user stats for single or double play.
  • Enjoy lv.: Level system for unlocking more game options and songs.
  • Result Star: Since XXX, the service is used to keep track of the stars earned by the player between each game.
  • Rivals: ability to target their scores, play their EDIT DATA.
  • Workout function: keep track of the calories spent while playing.
  • Character: Pick a character from the available rooster to be shown on screen dancing during gameplay.

PASELI

The service is encouraged to be linked with a PASELI (Pay Smart Enjoy Life) account which is a digital currency service. Depending on the versions, many incentives were created such as exclusives features (more options for example) and access to the game events using Premium Play.

Selecting a Style

  • Single Play (シングルプレー): One side of the dance floor (4 foot panels), one player. Always requires only one credit.
  • Versus Play (バーサスプレー): Two players, each with one side of the dance floor. This requires two credits unless Joint Premium is enabled.
  • Double Play (ダブルプレー): One player uses both sides of the dance floor. The BEGINNER difficulty is not available in this style. It also requires two credits unless Double Premium or Joint Premium is enabled.
  • Couple Play (カップルプレー): Only available in 3rdMIX or earlier. Two players each have one side of the dance floor, but each has different steps for the same difficulty. This requires two credits.

Selecting a Mode

Modes that appeared only in a single mix are not included.

NORMAL MODE

This is the default mode available in every mix. It allows the user to select the individual songs to play and to select the difficulty levels (after 2ndMIX only) one at a time. Depending on how the operator set the machine, the user can play 1 to 5 songs per game, plus an EXTRA STAGE if earned.

In DanceDanceRevolution, 2ndMIX, 5thMIX, DDRMAX and DanceDanceRevolution 2013 to DanceDanceRevolution 2014, this is the only mode available.

COURSE MODE

Instead of picking individual songs, the user have the possibility to select a course. A course is a group of at least four songs with each course having 2 difficulty levels. There are two lifebar types: the Normal lifebar similar to the standard lifebar, and the Challenge lifebar. With the Challenge lifebar, the player is given 4 or 8 lives (depending on difficulty level chosen) that deplete on each GOOD, BAD, MISS, or NG. When the player runs out of lives, they fail. One or two lives are recovered after each song successfully cleared.

Before DanceDanceRevolution X, the COURSE MODE was split in two parts: NONSTOP MODE and CHALLENGE MODE:

  • NONSTOP MODE first appeared in 3rdMIX and was removed in 5thMIX, and CHALLENGE MODE first appeared in DDRMAX2. EXTREME was the first mix to have both. NONSTOP MODE included courses with a selectable difficulty level and the standard lifebar.
  • CHALLENGE MODE featured only songs available at the Challenge difficulty level, a lifebar set to LIFE4 and no choice of modifiers to select.

COURSE MODE was removed altogether in DanceDanceRevolution (2013).

Selecting a Song

  • Only in normal mode.
  • Also known as the song wheel due to the use of a music wheel in the game.
  • First used banners until X2 where they were replaced with album jackets.

Modifiers

As of DanceDanceRevolution (2014), 14 modifiers are available in the game with some select choice options being exclusive to Premium Play. When using Versus play, each user can have their own settings which have to be set before playing a song. During special events such as an EXTRA STAGE, the number of modifiers available is limited.

  • Speed: Allow to change the speed of the arrow flow from 0.25 to 8 times faster than normal (x1). They were first added in DDRMAX with x1, x1.5, x2, x3, x5 and x8 as possible options. In DDR X, the x0.25, x0.5, x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5 speeds were added. During DanceDanceRevolution X2 to DanceDanceRevolution (2013), the x0.25 and the x0.5 speeds were removed. For DanceDanceRevolution (2014), x0.25 and x0.5 were added back and introduced x1.25, x1.75 and x2.25. On August 12th, 2014, x2.75, x3.25 and x3.75 were added. A total of 23 speed modifiers currently exist with 8 of them being Premium Play exclusives.

Results

Score

Since DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2, the scoring system stayed basically the same. Following the addition of Shock Arrows (SA) in DanceDanceRevolution X, they were also added to the step score formula. The maximum score possible for a song is 1 000 000 points. Scores are always displayed as multiples of 10 as no score will end with a digit other than 0.

The first step is to calculate the step score using the song various notescount:

Step Score (SC): 1 000 000 / (Notescount + Freeze Arrows + Shock Arrows)

The second step is to use the SC to calculate the user score using the player results:

Score: SC x (number of Marvelous + number of OKs) + (SC - 10) x (number of Perfects) + [(SC/2)-10] x number of Greats

Grade

  • Same table for both Single Play (SP) and Double Play (DP).
  • As long as the life gauge is not completely depleted, the song will be considered CLEAR and thus, receive a grade letter for the corresponding score.
  • Using the modifier CUT (ON1 or ON2) will always give you the letter E.

Full combo

A combo is created after hitting X steps without getting a Miss. A Full Combo (FC) happens when all of the songs' steps were hit by the player with the same timing. Since DDR 2013, the timing Good don't break a combo anymore.

  • Marvelous Full Combo (MFC): All Marvelous and/or O.K.
  • Perfect Full Combo (PFC): All Perfects and/or O.K.
  • Full Combo: All Good or higher and/or O.K. / All Good or higher and/or O.K.

EXTRA STAGE

The EXTRA STAGE was introduced in DDR 1st but was not found in a game until DDRMAX.

EXTRA STAGEs are not available in 2ndMIX through 5thMIX, the Japanese Dancing Stage games, or the Solo games, and are only available for PASELI users as of DanceDanceRevolution (2014).

ENCORE EXTRA STAGE

The ENCORE EXTRA STAGE was introduced in DDRMAX and was removed in DDR2013.
