The development team calls them "scales".
Nevertheless, what are the musical characteristics of Japan's unique "visual kei" songs? When I think about this, I think it's a fusion of pop song melody lines mainly in minor key, vertical beat punk drums, heavy metal guitar riffs, and 80's New Romantic-styled singing.
