Release Information
- Release date: July 13th, 2001
General Information / Changes
- First beatmania numbered title in almost two years.
- Once again, all previous beatmania songs have been removed, and are replaced with a brand-new set of 27 songs, which include a handful of commissioned songs by UK artists.
- ANOTHER difficulty has been renamed to MANIAC (which was previously the name used for HARD difficulty charts in ClubMIX).
- Charts of different difficulty modes (NORMAL/HARD/MANIAC) are no longer separated between gameplay modes (e.g. EASY and NORMAL in 3rdMIX, BASIC and HARD in 4thMIX.
- It is now possible to freely switch between NORMAL/HARD/MANIAC charts on the song select screen in NORMAL and FREE mode.
- Song titles graphics are now colored based on the selected difficulty; this trend would continue for the rest of the series.
- NORMAL: Yellow
- HARD: Red
- MANIAC: Green
- First beatmania game where selecting the gameplay UI's color scheme (frame color) also changes the menu's color scheme.
- Also the first beatmania game that explicitly shows the color schemes and names on the MODE SELECT screen.
- In 4thMIX and 5thMIX, only the gameplay UI's color scheme (frame color) would be changed upon selection, and there was no explicit indicator on the MODE select screen.
- A number of different interface color schemes can be chosen at the mode select menu by pressing the Start button.
- Also the first beatmania game that explicitly shows the color schemes and names on the MODE SELECT screen.
- Introduces FREE mode, which guarantees the player the ability to play all stages regardless of passing or failing.
- However, the number of stages available in FREE mode is less than that of NORMAL mode.
- Introduces EXPERT+ mode, which is a course of ten songs on ANOTHER difficulty.
- EXPERT+ contains an exclusive in-game frame consisting of judgment counts for each song played, the maximum combo earned, and the total notes played so far.
- EXPERT+ also has slightly different groove gauge mechanics from EXPERT mode.
- Instead of immediately failing the stage when the groove gauge runs out, it will flash "DANGER!"; getting a certain number of BADs/POORs beyond that point will result in failing the stage.
- If "DANGER!" appears during a stage but the stage is cleared, on the next stage the groove gauge will recover to where one tick remains (state before entering "DANGER!").

Codes & Unlock Information
Unlock ALL MUSIC Option, Secret EXPERT Courses, and EXPERT+ Mode
- To unlock the ALL MUSIC option, secret EXPERT courses (HI SPEED; AM-EAST; S&T), and EXPERT+ mode, follow the steps below on the title screen while it says to press either START button.
- Press and hold all key buttons on the 1P side (1+2+3+4+5).
- While continuing to hold all 1P-side key buttons, on the 2P side press the following buttons the listed number of times.
- 6 six times; 7 six times; 9 six times; 10 six times; 8 six times
- The title screen will turn blue and the ALL MUSIC option will appear in the title screen's options menu.
- The unlocked state will remain active until either the TEST MENU is entered, or the machine is powered off.
Select Options
- To select options, do so via either of the methods below.
- Available options will differ according to the method used, and whether Event Mode is enabled.
- Title Screen
- While the screen says to press either START button, press the EFFECT button, then press the corresponding key button(s) shown on screen, or rotate the turntable.
- Available options: BATTLE/CENTER; MIRROR/RANDOM; DOUBLE/IIDX DOUBLE; HI SPEED 1/2/3; HIDDEN/SUDDEN/HIDDEN+SUDDEN; ALL MUSIC (when unlocked)
- This method is not available while Event Mode is enabled.
- Song Select Screen
- Press and hold the EFFECT button, then press the corresponding key button(s) shown on screen.
- Available options: CENTER (Event Mode only); MIRROR/RANDOM; HI SPEED 1/2/3; HIDDEN/SUDDEN/HIDDEN+SUDDEN
- This method is available even while Event Mode is enabled.
Select Frame Color
- To select the frame color, do so from the MODE SELECTION screen by pressing the following buttons.
- Frame Color: 1P or 2P START (on an active play side)
- Default: Default
- One: Red
- Two: Gold
- Three: Forest
- Four: Darkness
- Five: Chocolate
- Six: Ocean
- Seven: Flat
- Eight: (Return to Default)
- Frame Color: 1P or 2P START (on an active play side)
Select Graphic Mode in EXPERT Mode
- To select the graphic mode in EXPERT Mode, do so from the course select screen by pressing the following buttons.
- 2+4 or 7+9 (both black key buttons on an active play side)
- Default: COUNTER
- One: MOVIE
- Two: (Return to Default)
- 2+4 or 7+9 (both black key buttons on an active play side)
Select Song Sort
- To select the song sort on the song select screen, press the START button on an active play side.
- Default: Difficulty
- One: Song Name
- Two: (Return to Default)
Select NORMAL/HARD/MANIAC Difficulty Charts
- To change between NORMAL/HARD/MANIAC difficulty charts on the song select screen, press 2+4 or 7+9 (both black key buttons on the respective play side).
- Default: NORMAL
- One: HARD
- Two: MANIAC
- Three: (Return to Default)
Event Mode
- Selecting Options, Song Sort, and Mode During Event Mode
- When Event Mode is enabled, there are several differences in making selections, which are as follows.
- The options menu cannot be shown on the title screen, preventing selection of options from there.
- The MODE SELECTION menu is skipped, preventing selection of game mode and frame color.
- Song selection is performed with the START button(s), instead of a white key button (1/3/5 or 6/8/10).
- To make each selection, follow the procedures below on the song select screen.
- Select Options
- Press and hold the EFFECT button, then press the corresponding key button(s) shown on screen.
- Unlike in non-Event Mode, the CENTER option can be enabled from this menu.
- To enable IIDX DOUBLE, enable the CENTER option, then select DOUBLE mode.
- Unlike in non-Event Mode, the CENTER option can be enabled from this menu.
- Press and hold the EFFECT button, then press the corresponding key button(s) shown on screen.
- Select Song Sort
- Press and hold the EFFECT button, then press either START button.
- Default: Difficulty
- One: Song Name
- Two: (Return to Default)
- Press and hold the EFFECT button, then press either START button.
- Select Mode
- Press the following button(s).
- 1P START: SINGLE
- 2P START: DOUBLE
- 1P+2P START: BATTLE
- Two-player non-BATTLE mode (DOUBLE chart with two lifebars) cannot be specifically selected while in Event Mode.
- However, if a chart says that BATTLE cannot be played and BATTLE is selected anyway, it will play two-player non-BATTLE mode (DOUBLE chart with two lifebars).
- Two-player non-BATTLE mode (DOUBLE chart with two lifebars) cannot be specifically selected while in Event Mode.
