* HARD mode is no longer separate from NORMAL mode. It is now possible to freely switch between NORMAL, HARD, and MANIAC charts at the music selection screen.
* Charts of different difficulty modes (NORMAL/HARD/MANIAC) are no longer separated between gameplay modes (e.g. EASY and NORMAL in 3rdMIX, BASIC and HARD in 4thMIX.
* Due to the absence of the Original and Remix categories from CORE REMIX, the song titles are colored based on difficulty: NORMAL is yellow, HARD is red, and MANIAC is green.
** It is now possible to freely switch between NORMAL/HARD/MANIAC charts on the song select screen in NORMAL and FREE mode.
* A number of different interface color schemes can be chosen at the mode select menu by pressing the Start button.
* Song titles graphics are now colored based on the selected difficulty; this trend would continue for the rest of the series.
* FREE mode introduced, which allows the player to play all the predefined number of songs regardless of difficulty. However, FREE mode only allows you to play 3 stages, as opposed to NORMAL mode's 4.
** NORMAL: Yellow
* EXPERT+ mode introduced, which is a course of the ten hardest charts in the game.
** HARD: Red

** MANIAC: Green
* Akehiro Hidaka and Yuuki Kuromitsu make their BEMANI debuts.
* First beatmania game where selecting the gameplay UI's color scheme (frame color) also changes the menu's color scheme.
** Also the first beatmania game that explicitly shows the color schemes and names on the MODE SELECT screen.
*** In 4thMIX and 5thMIX, only the gameplay UI's color scheme (frame color) would be changed upon selection, and there was no explicit indicator on the MODE select screen.
** A number of different interface color schemes can be chosen at the mode select menu by pressing the Start button.
* Introduces FREE mode, which guarantees the player the ability to play all stages regardless of passing or failing.
** However, the number of stages available in FREE mode is less than that of NORMAL mode.
* Introduces EXPERT+ mode, which is a course of ten songs on ANOTHER difficulty.
** EXPERT+ contains an exclusive in-game frame consisting of judgment counts for each song played, the maximum combo earned, and the total notes played so far.
** EXPERT+ also has slightly different groove gauge mechanics from EXPERT mode.
*** Instead of immediately failing the stage when the groove gauge runs out, it will flash "DANGER!"; getting a certain number of BADs/POORs beyond that point will result in failing the stage.
*** If "DANGER!" appears during a stage but the stage is cleared, on the next stage the groove gauge will recover to where one tick remains (state before entering "DANGER!").
