Dancemania

Overview

Dancemania is a series of compilation albums made by TOSHIBA-EMI (now Universal Music Japan), released under their i-DANCE label (known as Intercord Japan prior to 2000) between 1996 and 2013. Most albums in the series are nonstop megamixed, though some have separate discs with non-mixed versions. The main series mostly consists of Eurodance and other popular dance songs from the time of their release, along with several sub-series focusing on specific genres like happy hardcore, Miami bass or trance.

Dancemania is perhaps best known for its relation to the BEMANI series, particularly with DanceDanceRevolution. Thanks to an agreement between KONAMI and TOSHIBA-EMI, KONAMI was allowed to use a large number of songs from the Dancemania series in exchange for including advertisements in their games. As a result of this, nearly all licensed songs in the DanceDanceRevolution series up to DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA, as well as the Dance Maniax series and beatmania 5thMIX -Time to get down- were sourced from the Dancemania series. TOSHIBA-EMI also handled the release of soundtracks for DanceDanceRevolution and other games they were involved in while their partnership was active, and KONAMI occasionally contributed remixes of BEMANI original songs to the Dancemania SPEED sub-series.

Shortly after the release of DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA, KONAMI and TOSHIBA-EMI broke off their partnership (apart from a one-time deal for DanceDanceRevolution X3 VS 2ndMIX for Dancemania's 15th anniversary), though songs found in the Dancemania series continued to be licensed separately until DanceDanceRevolution A, with BEMANI remixes from the Dancemania series still in the games as of DanceDanceRevolution A20. The last Dancemania release (演歌SPEED) came out in 2013, shortly after EMI's recording operations were bought by Universal Music Group.
