General Information

  • Released: October 2000.
  • First appearance of Challenge Mode.
  • First appearance of 5-Line.
  • First appearance of Free Mode 2, which keeps track of the number of greats, goods, and bads you have. Pop'n Music 7 onward, however, show the number of greats, goods, and bads you have in a song in almost every mode.
  • First game in the series to let you set mods before each song.
  • First game in the series to have EX notecharts. Much like when Hypers were introduced, few songs have them.
  • Takayuki Ishikawa (dj TAKA) makes his debut, as does Osamu Migitera (Des-ROW) and Kida Shunsuke.
  • Sugimoto Kiyotaka starts writing his own music for the series. He would write multiple songs a game until Pop'n Music 8.
  • First actually known appearance of CG designer shio in the series. The Pop'n characters over time would develop a cleaner, cuter look under her direction, as Pop'n Music 6 and Pop'n Music 7 would later show.
  • First appearance of MZD as a rival character, though his role in Pop'n Music dates as far back as Pop'n Music 2.
  • Total number of songs: 54

Odd Trivia

  • On the official Pop'n Music 5 site, if you look up a character's profile, eventually he/she will switch to their 2P color and back again. This is the only Pop'n website that does this.
