Release Information

• Release date: March 17th, 2001
• Slogan: "弦"の刺激が突き刺さる！ ("Gen" no shigeki ga tsukisasaru!) / "打"の衝撃を解き放て！ ("Da" no shougeki wo tokihanate!)

General Information / Changes

• Introduced a new difficulty system, rating songs on a scale of 1 to 99 in difficulty. This would be used for the rest of the classic series, all the way up to GuitarFreaks V8 & DrumMania V8.
  • The difficulty system was also unified, now featuring three difficulties: BASIC, ADVANCED, and EXTREME. While not many changes were made in drummania (as the game already had three difficulties), in GUITARFREAKS the NORMAL and EXPERT difficulties were merged, causing some charts to be removed. The EXTREME and EXTREME+ charts were also moved to the ADVANCED and EXTREME difficulties, respectively.
• First of two games with MultiSession GDK, allowing you to combine GUITARFREAKS, drummania, and KEYBOARDMANIA together to play a handful of songs on.
• Secret note System was removed in GUITARFREAKS 5thMIX.
• Osamu Migitera makes his debut in the series.
• Long-time vocalists MAKI and Miyuki Kunitake join the series.
• System BGM is composed by Mutsuhiko Izumi and Hirofumi Sasaki, which would be used up to GUITARFREAKS 7thMIX & drummania 6thMIX.
  • The main theme for this game, GUITAR FREAKS 5th GIG, would be reused in future releases in the series as the Game Over tune.
• Total songs: 128 (84 in both, 24 only in GUITARFREAKS, 20 only in drummania)
