Release Information

  • Release dates:
    • DanceDanceRevolution: September 26th, 1998
    • DanceDanceRevolution Internet Ranking Version: November 18th, 1998

General Information

  • DanceDanceRevolution is also known as "version 1.0", and the Internet Ranking Version as "version 1.5".
    • In the later games, the version folder for DanceDanceRevolution is called DDR 1st.
  • DanceDanceRevolution has the first introduction video of the series during the opening credits.
  • The game features promotional materials related to the Dancemania series during the opening credits. This would continue to be the case until EXTREME.
  • The game features an announcer which was used until DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX.
  • The music selection screen is a jukebox-like menu with six CD covers, each representing a song available to play.
  • Three play style options are available: SINGLE, DOUBLE, and COUPLE.
    • DOUBLE requires a step code to activate.
  • Three play modes are available: EASY, NORMAL, and HARD.
    • The modes primarily differ in the songs available for selection.
    • EASY only allows one song, but the game will not end early if the dance gauge empties.
    • NORMAL and HARD allow three songs but will end the game early if the dance gauge empties. An EXTRA STAGE can also be earned in both of these modes.
    • The Single BASIC charts of BUTTERFLY and KUNG FU FIGHTING vary depending on the mode. The game uses slightly easier variations when playing on EASY or NORMAL, whereas it uses the standard BASIC charts for HARD mode. The easier variants were not used in any future games in the series.
  • Only two dance levels could initially be selected: BASIC and ANOTHER (DIFFICULT). MANIAC (EXPERT) was added with the Internet Ranking Version.
    • The difficulty is selected via step codes when choosing the play mode.
    • Only DanceDanceRevolution game where the gate transition effect uses different colors depending of the difficulty played (a darker shade of yellow/white for ANOTHER, and bright red for MANIAC).
  • The difficulty is rated in a foot rating scale of 1 to 7 (up to 8 in Internet Ranking Version) for all the dance levels available on each song:
    • SIMPLE (1 foot), AVERAGE (2 feet), NOVICE (3 feet), EXPERT (4 feet), PROFESSIONAL (5 feet), GENUINE (6 feet), HERO (7 feet)
  • Only one modifier is available, the TURN option MIRROR, which requires a step code to be entered on the dance stage.
  • The default arrow color is FLAT, and the default arrow design (later called CLASSIC) has a V-shaped cut on its tail end.
  • AFRO, LADY, KONSENTO:01 (コンセント1号) and OSHARE-ZUKIN (おしゃれずきん) are the only selectable characters. By default, AFRO is player 1 and LADY is player 2.
    • During gameplay, the selected character appears on screen dancing in front of animations.
    • Unlike future games, the animations that are played are determined by the current stage and the characters used.
    • To identify the choreography used by the dancer, the game shows on screen the type of dance currently in use: hip-hop, jazz, house and Capoeira. Showing the dance type is a feature only found in the original DanceDanceRevolution
  • The possible judgments for stepping are Perfect, Great, Good, Boo, and Miss.
  • The possible rank results for a song are S, A, B, C, and D.
  • First game in the series to have an EXTRA STAGE system. This system would not return until DDRMAX's release.
  • The Internet Ranking Version update is the more common version, and includes two new songs and some interface updates.
    • VERSUS was added and requires a code to activate.
    • Single MANIAC and Double ANOTHER charts were added.
    • The foot level names were changed, and would stay the same (with the addition of foot level 9 CATASTROPHIC) through 3rdMIX PLUS.
      • EXORBITANT was added as level 8 and levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 were changed to MODERATE, ORDINARY, SUPERIOR, MARVELOUS, PARAMOUNT respectively.
    • The score is now displayed in red instead of blue.
    • Successfully hit arrows disappear and display a flash on the receptors. The original game made no visual distinction between hit and missed arrows.
    • Internet Ranking codes are displayed after your game to submit your high scores online.
    • The original release used the 1986-1998 KONAMI logo in-game (one of only five Japanese BEMANI games to use it, the other four being the first two beatmania arcade games, the original PlayStation beatmania home port, and pop'n music). Internet Ranking Version uses the 1998-2003 KONAMI logo.
  • Total songs: 9 (1.0), 11 (1.5)

EXTRA STAGE

The EXTRA STAGE system gives access to one free song on the next dance level difficulty than the currently selected one by the player if it exists.

  • In the original DanceDanceRevolution, it's only possible to have an EXTRA STAGE by playing BASIC Single Play which give access to one song on ANOTHER. To access this extra song, the player must choose a specific song for the FINAL STAGE and clear it with a full-gauge. For NORMAL mode, the FINAL STAGE song must be MY FIRE. For HARD mode, the FINAL STAGE song must be PARANOiA.
  • In the Internet Ranking Version, this was expanded to also include ANOTHER Single Play granting a song on MANIAC and BASIC Double Play giving a song on ANOTHER to play. The requirements are the same as the original game, except that TRIP MACHINE (instead of MY FIRE) must be the FINAL STAGE song chosen for NORMAL mode. For HARD mode, either TRIP MACHINE or PARANOiA must be selected as the FINAL STAGE song.
