- Release date: March 18th, 2000
General Information / Changes
- First pop'n music game to run on BEMANI FIREBEAT HARDWARE, which was also used for beatmania III, KEYBOARDMANIA, and ee'MALL. The colors and graphics are more colorful and detailed than ever as a result of the more powerful hardware.
- It also allowed for the return of a lot of the removed characters from the earlier arcade pop'n music games.
- FIREBEAT would be used through pop'n music 8.
- With 87 playable songs, pop'n music 4 had the largest songlist in the series until pop'n music 7 (not counting course-exclusive songs in pop'n music 6).
- First arcade pop'n music game to have speed modifiers. However, the only one is 2X.
- First pop'n music arcade game with HYPER charts for the new arcade originals.
- It's also the first pop'n music arcade game where HYPER charts are playable by default.
- It's also the first pop'n music game to individually rate HYPER charts.
- First pop'n music game to tell you the BPM of a song on stage select.
- First pop'n music game with categories divided by individual games (1-4, as well as an ALL folder).
- First pop'n music game in the series to have a distinctive interface (1-3 were essentially the same interface with color differences).
- Only mainline pop'n music game prior to pop'n music ラピストリア without individual song, MISS, and FEVER backgrounds. Instead, backdrops are used as the background for songs.
- Tatsuya Furukawa (good-cool) and Seiya Murai (V.C.O., Kiyommy+Seiya, natural bear, etc.) make their pop'n music debuts.
- Hiroki Koga (Naya~n) starts writing his own music for the series.
- Only game in the series to have two individual CDs for one installment:
- pop'n music 4 arcade originals; contains all songs in pop'n music 4, plus BGM and three new long versions
- pop'n music 4 consumer originals: contains all the pop'n music 4 songs (except GROOVE ROCK), but replaces the above album's BGM and longs with the ten new pop'n music 4 APPEND DISC songs, plus three new longs from 4 CS.
- Only pop'n music arcade game where none of the arcade songs have ever gotten HYPER charts in BATTLE MODE.
- All the menus feature rearrangements of the first pop'n music game's BGM by Seiya Murai.
