The EXTRA STAGE system gives access to one free song on the next dance level difficulty than the currently selected one by the player if it exists. Only by playing BASIC SINGLE mode can the player play the EXTRA STAGE, which gives access to one song on ANOTHER difficulty. To access this extra song, the player must choose a specific song for the FINAL STAGE and clear it with a full-gauge (MY FIRE for Normal mode; PARANOiA for Hard mode).

The EXTRA STAGE system gives access to one free song on the next dance level difficulty than the currently selected one by the player if it exists.
* In the original DanceDanceRevolution, it's only possible to have an EXTRA STAGE by playing BASIC Single Play which give access to one song on ANOTHER. The other condition is to clear any song on the FINAL STAGE with a full-gauge to get either MY FIRE to appear when playing NORMAL or PARANOiA on HARD mode.
* In the Internet Ranking Version, this was expanded to also include ANOTHER Single Play granting a song on MANIAC and BASIC Double Play giving a song on ANOTHER to play. The other condition is to clear a song on the FINAL STAGE with a full-gauge to either get TRIP MACHINE to appear when playing NORMAL mode or TRIP MACHINE or PARANOiA on HARD mode.

    • The Single BASIC charts of BUTTERFLY and KUNG FU FIGHTING vary depending on the mode. The game uses slightly easier variations when playing on EASY or NORMAL, whereas it uses the standard BASIC charts for HARD mode. The easier variants were not used in any future games in the series.
  • Two difficulties are available for the songs' charts: BASIC and ANOTHER.
    • The difficulty is selected via a step code when choosing the play mode.
    • Only DanceDanceRevolution game where the gate transition effect uses different colors depending of the difficulty and mode played (a darker shade of yellow/white for ANOTHER, as well as light blue for DOUBLE).
  • The difficulty is rated in a foot rating scale of 1 to 7 for all the dance levels available on each song:
    • BEGINNER (1 foot), AVERAGE (2 feet), NOVICE (3 feet), EXPERT (4 feet), PROFESSIONAL (5 feet), MASTER (6 feet), HERO (7 feet).
  • Only one modifier is available, the TURN option MIRROR, which requires a step code to be entered on the dance stage.
  • The default arrow color is FLAT, and the default arrow design (later called CLASSIC) has a V-shaped cut on its tail end.
  • AFRO, LADY, KONSENTO:01 (コンセント1号), OSHARE-ZUKIN (おしゃれずきん), DISC-A and DISC-B (輪っか) are the only selectable characters. By default, AFRO is player 1 and LADY is player 2.
    • During gameplay, the selected character appears on screen dancing in front of animations.
    • Unlike future games, the animations that are played are determined by the current stage and the characters used.
    • To identify the choreography used by the dancer, the game shows on screen the type of dance currently in us, which is a feature only found in DanceDanceRevolution and its Internet Ranking Version. The list of choreographies is as follows:
      • HIPHOP, FUNK, LOCK, CAPOEIRA, JAZZ, SOUL, HOUSE, HOPPING, WAVE.
  • The possible judgments for stepping are PERFECT!!!, GREAT!!, GOOD!, BOO!, and MISS.
  • The possible rank results for a song are S, A, B, C, and D.
  • First game in the series to have an EXTRA STAGE system. This system would not return until DDRMAX's release.

EXTRA STAGE

The EXTRA STAGE system gives access to one free song on the next dance level difficulty than the currently selected one by the player if it exists. Only by playing BASIC SINGLE mode can the player play the EXTRA STAGE, which gives access to one song on ANOTHER difficulty. To access this extra song, the player must choose a specific song for the FINAL STAGE and clear it with a full-gauge (MY FIRE for Normal mode; PARANOiA for Hard mode).

Dancing characters
  • KONSENTO:01 (コンセント1号), OSHARE-ZUKIN (おしゃれずきん): Hold down the Left button when starting a game or press the ← foot panel when pressing the Start button.
  • DISC-A & DISC-B (輪っか): Hold down the Right button at the start of a game or press the → foot panel when pressing the Start button.
Play Styles
  • DOUBLE: On the Play Mode Select screen, press both Start buttons then input ↑↑↓↓←→←→ on the foot panels (not pressing the other Start button will only allow for one STAGE play).
