* First pop'n music game where GOODs don't stop your combo. This has been a series staple since.
* First pop'n music game where GOODs don't stop your combo. This has been a series staple since.
* pop-kuns are now separated into lanes corresponding to their color, as opposed to the earlier games' featuring black backgrounds and a colored line showing where each button is.
* First non-spinoff pop'n music game with anime licenses, featuring pop'n music mascots Mimi and Nyami dressed up for each license. They, as well as other pop'n music characters, would continue doing so for licenses up until pop'n music 15 ADVENTURE.
* Result screens no longer shown your individual performances on the nine buttons, a feature first introduced in pop'n music 2.
** Anime/TV characters are not playable, a trend that would continue in the series until pop'n music 9.
* First pop'n music game with Battle Mode and Expert Mode.
* Only pop'n music game where difficulty levels for non-Battle charts are determined by their notecount.
* First pop'n music game with playable Challenge Mode on 5-Line.
** Difficulty levels are calculated as such; notecount/20, and then rounded off. (For example, a song with 200 notes would be rated a 10.)
* First pop'n music game with Hi-Speed 3 and 4.
* Result screens no longer show individual performances on buttons, a feature first introduced in pop'n music 2.
* First non-spinoff pop'n music game with anime licenses.
* pop'n music 6 introduced a lot of cosmetic and game mode changes:
* First pop'n music game in the series where every new song has a Normal AND Hyper notechart.
** pop-kuns are now being separated into lanes corresponding to their color.
* First pop'n music game with intro animations, animated by shio.
** CHALLENGE MODE now being available on 5-Buttons.
* First pop'n music game with banners. They were noticeably taller than later games in the series. Come the following installment, the banners were shrunken in size to look similar in shape and size to those of fellow BEMANI series DanceDanceRevolution.
** HI-SPEED 3 and 4 were added.
* First pop'n music game in the series to include the singing of ALPHA, who would sing many, many songs with Des-ROW over the years.
** EX charts are now playable outside of EXtra STAGE.
* First appearance of beatmania sound director Takehiko Fujii, as well GUITARFREAKS & drummania mainstays Hideyuki Ono and Jimmy Weckl in the series.
** First game with a fully animated intro, this one animated by shio.
** Long-time pop'n music staff member Mr.T writes music for the series for the first time.
** First appearance of banners on the song select screen. They were noticeably taller than later games in the series. The banners were designed slightly shorter on the following installment, looking closer to those of fellow BEMANI series DanceDanceRevolution.
* Hideo Suwa makes his BEMANI debut in this game.
** Two new game modes were added: BATTLE and EXPERT.
*** BATTLE has two players play with only three buttons (green, white and yellow) on the left or right side of the machine. The blue button triggers a minigame; if you lose, it triggers an Ojama depending on the player's level, which fills with GREATs.
*** EXPERT, a 9-buttons exclusive mode where players play four songs consecutively with a different GROOVE GAUGE that decreases fast for BADs and increases slowly; the game automatically ends once the gauge is depleted at any point.
* This is the first mainline arcade pop'n music title with no new Hiroshi Takeyasu song.
* This is the first mainline arcade pop'n music title with no new Hiroshi Takeyasu song.
* Challenge Mode is more streamlined, allowing you to use two different challenges per song. This set-up is still used to this day.
* Only appearance of RGB Mode.
* Total number of songs: 63
* Only pop'n music game where EX charts have no numbers.
* Only pop'n music game since the introduction of BPM listings in pop'n music 4 to not list them in-game.
* CHALLENGE MODE now lets you use select two different challenges per song.
* NORMAL MODE no longer limits stage numbers exclusively to a certain stage; see this list for more details.
* System BGM is composed by SIMON MAN.
* Total songs: 63

Release Information

General Information / Changes

  • First pop'n music game where GOODs don't stop your combo. This has been a series staple since.
  • First non-spinoff pop'n music game with anime licenses, featuring pop'n music mascots Mimi and Nyami dressed up for each license. They, as well as other pop'n music characters, would continue doing so for licenses up until pop'n music 15 ADVENTURE.
    • Anime/TV characters are not playable, a trend that would continue in the series until pop'n music 9.
  • Only pop'n music game where difficulty levels for non-Battle charts are determined by their notecount.
    • Difficulty levels are calculated as such; notecount/20, and then rounded off. (For example, a song with 200 notes would be rated a 10.)
  • Result screens no longer show individual performances on buttons, a feature first introduced in pop'n music 2.
  • pop'n music 6 introduced a lot of cosmetic and game mode changes:
    • pop-kuns are now being separated into lanes corresponding to their color.
    • CHALLENGE MODE now being available on 5-Buttons.
    • HI-SPEED 3 and 4 were added.
    • EX charts are now playable outside of EXtra STAGE.
    • First game with a fully animated intro, this one animated by shio.
    • First appearance of banners on the song select screen. They were noticeably taller than later games in the series. The banners were designed slightly shorter on the following installment, looking closer to those of fellow BEMANI series DanceDanceRevolution.
    • Two new game modes were added: BATTLE and EXPERT.
      • BATTLE has two players play with only three buttons (green, white and yellow) on the left or right side of the machine. The blue button triggers a minigame; if you lose, it triggers an Ojama depending on the player's level, which fills with GREATs.
      • EXPERT, a 9-buttons exclusive mode where players play four songs consecutively with a different GROOVE GAUGE that decreases fast for BADs and increases slowly; the game automatically ends once the gauge is depleted at any point.
  • This is the first mainline arcade pop'n music title with no new Hiroshi Takeyasu song.
  • Only appearance of RGB Mode.
  • Only pop'n music game where EX charts have no numbers.
  • Only pop'n music game since the introduction of BPM listings in pop'n music 4 to not list them in-game.
  • CHALLENGE MODE now lets you use select two different challenges per song.
  • NORMAL MODE no longer limits stage numbers exclusively to a certain stage; see this list for more details.
  • System BGM is composed by SIMON MAN.
  • Total songs: 63
