* Theme: cafe. | |||
* First pop'n music game to run with eAMUSEMENT cards, and the first game to support ee'MALL.
* First pop'n music game to feature Osusume (recommendation) mode, where the player is asked questions, and the game makes a song list based on the answers they chose. This mode would be used through pop'n music 11.
* First pop'n music game to run on the PlayStation 2-based BEMANI Python 1, which was also used for Dancing Stage Fusion and several non-BEMANI titles. The Python 1 was used up to pop'n music 14 FEVER!.
* First pop'n music game with LONG songs, which are old, double-length pop'n music songs with brand-new charts and banners (though the characters and their MISS backgrounds are from their original games of origin). These songs count as two stages, and can't be played on the final stage or EXtra stage.
** All LONG songs were removed in pop'n music 16 PARTY♪.
* Stage BGM changes after STAGEs in NORMAL or CHALLENGE depending on what song you played last. It is the only pop'n music game to do this:
** FIRST STAGE will always play the system BGM from pop'n stage.
** Playing a song from pop'n music, 2, or 3 (or its CS counterparts) will change the system BGM on the next STAGE to pop'n music's.
** Playing a song from pop'n music 4 or 5 (or its CS counterparts) will change it to the pop'n music 4's
** Playing a song from pop'n music 6 or 7 (or its CS counterparts) will change it to the pop'n music 6's
** Playing a song from pop'n music 8 or pop'n music 9 will change it to pop'n music 8's.
* The website for pop'n music 9 is the first to list the individual number ratings for each song.
** It is also the first that shows you every song in the game, not just new songs.
* pop'n music 9 marks one of the very few times in the pop'n music series where cover artists for TV & ANIME songs are thanked by their artist name, as opposed to only crediting the vocalist or no one at all.
* NORMAL MODE no longer has stage restrictions based on stage number.
* Only pop'n music game to feature HITASURA mode, in which you play every song on a certain difficulty scale (1 to 8 stars). You play three songs at a time, and aside from the first song, all other songs are not shown. Progress can be continued with either a password (provided at the end of each round) or the use of eAMUSEMENT.
** Instead of a bar, you have 50 hearts, one taken away for each BAD you get in a song. Once all 50 run out, it's GAME OVER. Hearts will not replenish between rounds.
* Last pop'n music game in the series to use the old results sounds.
** It's also the last to feature the opening narration used in every game in the series since the first game.
* First pop'n music arcade game with no new song composed/written/sung by Kiyotaka Sugimoto.
* Anime & TV characters are now playable.
* System BGM is composed by Seiya Murai.
* eAMUSEMENT support for pop'n music 9 ended on August 20th, 2003.
* Total songs: 306 | |||

= Gambler de Z (ギャンブラーZ) =
pop'n music 9's unlock system is Gambler de Z, which started on February 12th, 2003. eAMUSEMENT is required to start the event.
In Gambler de Z, you control an 8-bit TORU KAMIKAZE around a labyrinth, unlocking chests, finding money, and battling bosses. A chiptune version of his theme song, The theme of GAMBLER Z, plays during the event.
After a round of play in ARCADE, you will be given a select amount of die. How many you get depends on how many stages are cleared in the round beforehand: three maximum for a regular round of NORMAL/BATTLE/CHALLENGE (no EXtra Stage), and four for clearing a round of EXPERT/CHALLENGE with EXtra Stage. The first two/three die are regular die, while the final one acts as a multiplier. For example, if you have four die and get 1, 2, 2, and then 3, you'll move 15 spaces. Your goal is to reach the end of the labyrinth, which can end with one of six different battles. Aside from boss battles (which are explained in more detail below), all items are random in their placement on the map.
Occasionally TORU KAMIKAZE will encounter a chest, which will feature one of several items: money (which rewards you with nothing), an entry card (which grants you charts/mods/characters), or a brand-new song.
At the end of your run, regardless of the path you take, you will engage in a boss battle, in which you will be forced to play a chart to unlock it for permanent play. If you clear the chart, you'll unlock it instantly. Fail to, and you'll still hurt the opponent a bit, but you'll forced to try again on the next round of play until you either clear the chart, or battle the boss enough times to obtain the chart anyway (their health represented with hearts). Defeated bosses do not return on repeat playthroughs.
After you clear all five bosses, you must traverse one final time to the final boss of WARUDOC, who will always be the boss regardless of what you take (the music also changes to a chiptune version of はばたけ、ザ・グレートギャンブラー on his floor). Defeat WARUDOC to end the event.
Gambler de Z ended on March 12th, 2003. All songs and charts were automatically unlocked for everyone on the same day.

pop'n music 9
Release Information
- Release date: December 25th, 2002
- Soundtrack release date:
- pop'n music 9 AC ♥ CS pop'n music 7: February 5th, 2003.
General Information / Changes
- Theme: cafe.
- First pop'n music game to run with eAMUSEMENT cards, and the first game to support ee'MALL.
- First pop'n music game to feature Osusume (recommendation) mode, where the player is asked questions, and the game makes a song list based on the answers they chose. This mode would be used through pop'n music 11.
- First pop'n music game to run on the PlayStation 2-based BEMANI Python 1, which was also used for Dancing Stage Fusion and several non-BEMANI titles. The Python 1 was used up to pop'n music 14 FEVER!.
- First pop'n music game with LONG songs, which are old, double-length pop'n music songs with brand-new charts and banners (though the characters and their MISS backgrounds are from their original games of origin). These songs count as two stages, and can't be played on the final stage or EXtra stage.
- All LONG songs were removed in pop'n music 16 PARTY♪.
- Stage BGM changes after STAGEs in NORMAL or CHALLENGE depending on what song you played last. It is the only pop'n music game to do this:
- FIRST STAGE will always play the system BGM from pop'n stage.
- Playing a song from pop'n music, 2, or 3 (or its CS counterparts) will change the system BGM on the next STAGE to pop'n music's.
- Playing a song from pop'n music 4 or 5 (or its CS counterparts) will change it to the pop'n music 4's
- Playing a song from pop'n music 6 or 7 (or its CS counterparts) will change it to the pop'n music 6's
- Playing a song from pop'n music 8 or pop'n music 9 will change it to pop'n music 8's.
- The website for pop'n music 9 is the first to list the individual number ratings for each song.
- It is also the first that shows you every song in the game, not just new songs.
- pop'n music 9 marks one of the very few times in the pop'n music series where cover artists for TV & ANIME songs are thanked by their artist name, as opposed to only crediting the vocalist or no one at all.
- NORMAL MODE no longer has stage restrictions based on stage number.
- Only pop'n music game to feature HITASURA mode, in which you play every song on a certain difficulty scale (1 to 8 stars). You play three songs at a time, and aside from the first song, all other songs are not shown. Progress can be continued with either a password (provided at the end of each round) or the use of eAMUSEMENT.
- Instead of a bar, you have 50 hearts, one taken away for each BAD you get in a song. Once all 50 run out, it's GAME OVER. Hearts will not replenish between rounds.
- Last pop'n music game in the series to use the old results sounds.
- It's also the last to feature the opening narration used in every game in the series since the first game.
- First pop'n music arcade game with no new song composed/written/sung by Kiyotaka Sugimoto.
- Anime & TV characters are now playable.
- System BGM is composed by Seiya Murai.
- eAMUSEMENT support for pop'n music 9 ended on August 20th, 2003.
- Total songs: 306

Gambler de Z (ギャンブラーZ)
pop'n music 9's unlock system is Gambler de Z, which started on February 12th, 2003. eAMUSEMENT is required to start the event.
