General Information / Changes
- First GF/DM game in the XG (X-Grade) series, featuring completely revamped guitar and drum cabinets.
- Released concurrently with GuitarFreaks V7 & DrumMania V7.
- GuitarFreaksXG & DrumManiaXG are in the first games in the series
- To feature videos with video overlays.
- With no subtitle since GuitarFreaks V3 & DrumMania V3.
- Since the original 1999 GUITARFREAKS game to not introduce any new Long Version songs.
- To have no new Osamu Migitera song since GUITARFREAKS 7thMIX & drummania 6thMIX.
- Not to contain a new song from TЁЯRA since their debut in the series.
- Game mode is divided between three modes:
- PRACTICE: similar to EASY mode in the previous games, where a tutorial on how to play the game is shown.
- STANDARD: features the game's new controls, songs, and select songs from the classic GuitarFreaks & DrumMania, with remade charts for XG.
- CLASSIC: plays identically to the previous games in the series.
- Jackets replace banners for songs on music select, even in CLASSIC.
- Difficulty for STANDARD is different from the series' older scale:
- It uses a 1-10 scale with two decimal points.
- BASIC, ADVANCED, and EXTREME are renamed to NOVICE, REGULAR, and EXPERT. This change would be reverted in GITADORA.
- MASTER difficulty added, which requires clearing a song's EXTREME chart. However, not all songs have MASTER charts.
- Unlike previous games, information for licensed songs and covers are absent from the game's website.
- Notes Radar chart is removed, though it was replaced with detailed statistics of the song charts and the number of notes of each button/drum among others.
- Part of a collaboration with the arcade game FORTUNE TRINITY. By playing FORTUNE TRINITY, XG players can unlock Croquette. FORTUNE TRINITY features XG's You've Got 2 Get Me, and by XG, players can unlock 三毛猫JIVE＆ジャイブ and 太陽の花.
- System BGM composed by 96.
- eAMUSEMENT support for GuitarFreaksXG & DrumManiaXG ended on April 30th, 2011.
- Total songs: 232 (STANDARD - GuitarFreaks: 231, DrumMania: 231), 610 (CLASSIC - GuitarFreaks: 603, DrumMania: 604)
Gameplay changes
GuitarFreaks changes
- Guitar now features five frets, in order from left to right: red, green, blue, yellow, purple. Red through yellow frets are used on NOVICE and REGULAR difficulties, and all five are used on EXPERT and MASTER difficulties.
- Open Pick mode removed; open notes now appear on guitar/Bass EXPERT and MASTER charts.
- Wailing bonuses must now be performed in a specific direction (up, down, or right).
- A foot effector has been added, which allows the guitar to be played with chorus, delay, or reverb effects. The guitar effect knob has been retained, which now alters the effect strength.
- Guitar neck and body have been made significantly lighter.
DrumMania changes
- Drums now feature a left cymbal (LC), floor tom (FT), and left pedal (LP) in addition to the existing: hi-hat (HH), snare drum (SN), high tom (HT), low tom (LT), bass pedal (BP), and cymbal (CY).
- The left pedal is used only on EXPERT and MASTER difficulties, and depending on the song, serves as a hi-hat and/or a bass drum.
- Three configurations for viewing lanes are available:
- A: LC HH LP SN HT BP LT FT CY (Default)
- B: LC HH SN LP BP HT LT FT CY
- C: LC HH LP SN BP HT LT FT CY
- A drum kit with the viewing lanes is now displayed onscreen, placed in front of the song video.
Grading & Achievement Ratio
Achievement Ratio is now used to determine letter grades for a song. The formulas for the ratio are as follows:
- GuitarFreaks: Perfect% x .85 + Great% x .25 + Max Combo% x .15
- DrumMania: Perfect% x .85 + Great% x .35 + Max Combo% x .15
Based on this ratio, the following letter grades are available:
- SS = 95.00+
- S = 80.00 - 94.99
- A = 73.00 - 79.99
- B = 63.00 - 72.99
- C = 53.00 - 62.99
- D = 45.00 - 52.99
- E = 0 - 44.99

EXTRA/ENCORE STAGE Requirements
- EXTRA STAGE: Obtain a net total of 0 points over a playthrough, where for a given song:
- SS = 3 points, S = 1 point, A = -1 point, B = -3 points, C = -5 points, D = -7 points, E = -9 points.
When accessed, an Extra Stage-specific song may be played in addition to any song on the regular song list.
- ENCORE STAGE: Obtain 95% achievement ratio (Perfects only on Classic Mode) on an Extra Stage-specific song (marked in red on the song list) without using any Auto modes. When accessed, the ENCORE STAGE (and only the ENCORE STAGE) will be made playable up to the highest difficulty level played on EXTRA STAGE. On Extra Level 15, the game's final EXTRA STAGE, the requirement is lowered to 92%.
- CLIMAX STAGE: Obtain 98% achievement ratio (Perfects only on Classic Mode) on an Extra Stage-specific song (marked in red on the song list) without using any Auto modes. When accessed, the CLIMAX STAGE (and only the CLIMAX STAGE) will be made playable up to the highest difficulty level played on EXTRA STAGE. On Extra Level 15, the game's final EXTRA STAGE, the requirement is lowered to 95%.

Classic Revival Unlocks
With the exception of Cutie pie, all pre-XG GuitarFreaks & DrumMania songs need to be unlocked. Revivals come in two sets of unlocks: revivals unlocked randomly after a playthrough, and those that have to be unlocked in a specific timeframe.
Random Unlocks
JukeBox
Similar to how the other revived songs are unlocked, the JukeBox songs are unlocked one by one after each playthrough. The difference is that they are only available during a limited time before being unlocked for everyone.
For JukeBox#2, players were allowed to nominate songs from previous games for XG charts via the GF/DM staff blog from May 1st through 17th, 2010.
From June 24th through July 5th, 2010, players were allowed to nominate songs from previous games for XG charts via the GF/DM staff blog for JukeBox#3.
