Release Information
- Release Date: March 27th, 2001.
General Information / Changes
- Introduces new songwheel interface, displaying song titles in bigger fonts, but subtitles and artist names in smaller fonts for each song.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to feature LONG VERSION songs.
- LONG VERSION songs can only be played on the second to last stage in a playthrough. It counts as two whole songs when played.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to list BPM changes in a song.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to feature stops in a song.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to introduce AAA rating when achieving perfect full combo, instead of AA which had been used since DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX.
- First and only DanceDanceRevolution game with a windowed demo loop to display warning screen, KONAMI, and BEMANI logos, and Dancemania albums, except the title screen, tutorial and demonstration song.
- First DanceDanceRevolution to feature a different in-song interface, with the top and bottom parts of the screen cropped to make room for score counters and a bar. This would continue to be used in the arcade series until DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA.
- Announcer saying "Dance Dance Revolution" returns (but in new tone) since DanceDanceRevolution 3rdMIX when selecting 2ndMIX MODE.
- Last DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature dancing characters until the release of DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA.
- The NONSTOP course mode introduced in DanceDanceRevolution 3rdMIX was removed.
- First mainline DanceDanceRevolution game to run at 60 frames per second. (Dancing Stage featuring TRUE KiSS DESTiNATiON first featured 60 FPS, in 1999.)
- Last DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to have the announcer used from the original DanceDanceRevolution title.
- Only one of the 19 new licenses in 5thMix ever appeared in another mainline DanceDanceRevolution arcade release.
- In addition, five KONAMI originals (DIVE, Radical Faith, THE CUBE and two long versions of KONAMI originals) have never reappeared in another mainline DanceDanceRevolution arcade release.
- With 23 exclusive tracks in any mainline DanceDanceRevolution arcade release, and 20 for arcade releases in general, 5thMIX had the record for the largest amount of exclusive tracks in any mainline arcade release.
- This record was narrowly overtaken by DanceDanceRevolution (2014), which had 24 exclusive tracks that have yet to be revived.
- CAN'T STOP FALLIN' IN LOVE ~SPEED MIX~ was introduced as a license in 5thMIX, but was reintroduced as a KONAMI original in DDRMAX2 -DanceDanceRevolution 7thMIX-. It is retained in every subsequent mainline release to date.
- NEVER ENDING STORY (Power Club Vocal Mix) and TEST MY BEST make a one-time reappearance in Dancing Stage EuroMIX2.
- Selecting difficulty during the song selection screen has been returned, replacing separate difficulty menu which had been used since DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX.
- All of the game's song banners (new and old songs alike) are taken from the respective song's in-game background.
- Songs from 5thMIX revived in later DanceDanceRevolution games would gain unique banners then, though.
- Song backgrounds for each song now always appear at the beginning and end of every song. This carried over to all future DanceDanceRevolution titles up to DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- For the first time in a DanceDanceRevolution game, most of the old songs introduced prior to DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX were removed. Previously, roughly one licensed song or so was removed in a new version of the series.
- Of the 87 songs that 4thMIX retained from 1stMIX to 3rdMIX PLUS, only the 20 most popular songs at the time of release remain in 5thMIX.
- All 14 new songs in 4thMIX PLUS remain in 5thMIX.
- 48 of the new songs in 4thMIX remain in 5thMIX, leaving SAINT GOES MARCHING (REMIX) as the only new song in 4thMIX to be absent from 5thMIX
- EXTREME and subsequent games revived most of the KONAMI originals missing from 5thMIX. In addition, EXTREME revived several licenses, including SAINT GOES MARCHING (REMIX).
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show play style indicator in song selection, stage result, and overall result of all stages.
- New songs: 40
- Total songs: 122
