General Information / Changes

  • Both the first Japanese console KONAMI game and the first pop'n music game released with the current KONAMI logo. Early box art showed the 1998-2003 bold KONAMI logo, however.
  • First CS pop'n to show you clear status for songs in ARCADE mode.
  • Last consecutive CS pop'n music game to have all the hidden arcade songs from the previous installment brought over. This would not happen again until pop'n music 12 いろは CS.
  • Last CS pop'n with FREE TRAINING MODE.
    • As such, it is also the last CS pop'n music game where songs played with the EXtra Stage bar still count as a clear in TRAINING MODE.
  • Difficulty levels for songs are based on pop'n music 9, not the original arcade version of pop'n music 8.
  • THUNDER BIRDS and みなしごハッチ are absent from the songlist as they were removed following pop'n music 8.
  • Total songs: 104, tied with pop'n music 6 CS as the biggest of any console pop'n game at the time.

Unlock Information

Sugoroku de 8 (すごろくde8)

pop'n music 8's unlock system is called Sugoroku de 8 (すごろくde8) (sugoroku is a children's dice game.) It will appear after your last song in ARCADE. However, to access it, you must beat a certain condition in that round, which changes from round to round (for example, using speed mods, fulfilling certain point requirements, etc.). Successfully doing so unlocks the game after that round of ARCADE.

Playing the game is simple; you simply roll a die, and pop'n music character P-1 will then move to the amount of spaces it lands in. For every three spaces you land on, you reach a city in Japan, which can unlock songs, courses, and hidden playable characters. The event ends once you unlock TECHNO POP.

Completing Sugoroku de 8 (100% completion rate) also unlocks the four title screen triggered songs, LIVE songs, expert course exclusive songs, and CS original song LATIN ENKA.

Week one (1週目): all unlocks are songs.

Title Screen Trigger Songs

Four of pop'n music 8 CS' songs can be triggered in ARCADE by fulfilling certain requirements at the title screen. These songs can also be unlocked via time unlock.

To access these songs, you must carefully press START depending on what animations and colors Nyami and Mimi are performing at the title screen. It can also be adjusted via difficulty level as well. Here are the levels explained on the official website:

  • Level 1: 2P color, FEVER! animation (jumping in the air with flowers behind them)
  • Level 2: 2P color, GREAT animation (posing with a thumb, the word "YEAH!!" above their head)
  • Level 3: 1P color, normal animation (moving back and forth)
  • Level 4: 1P color, GREAT animation as described above
  • Level 5: 1P color, FEVER! animation as described above

If you did it correctly, you'll be able to access one of the following songs at the end of a round of NORMAL or CHALLENGE after FINAL STAGE. You'll also unlock Mimi/Nyami [8-SPECIAL COOKING] and SANAE♥chan [8] after playing SPECIAL COOKING and SUBURBIA respectively.

Depending on what level you're at, the following song will appear:

  • Level 1: CLASSIC 8
  • Level 2: SUBURBIA
  • Level 4: SPECIAL COOKING
  • Level 5: TRAUMA PUNK

Note that this is the only way to unlock CLASSIC 8 and TRAUMA PUNK outside of time unlock or completing Sugoroku de 8.

Goal Oriented Unlocks

The following songs can be unlocked in ARCADE MODE by fulfilling certain requirements.

pop'n music 8 hidden songs

  • SUBURBIA: clear the song in the Sana course once unlocked.
  • SPECIAL COOKING: clear the song in the PAYAPAYA course once unlocked.

LIVE songs

With the sole exception of PASSION LIVE, all these songs will appear after FINAL STAGE in ARCADE once their requirements have been met. They will also appear if you fulfill the bonus stage method listed above with the title screen unlocks.

  • MELO CORE LIVE:
    • Get a MAX COMBO, a mixture of GREAT/GOOD/BAD, or a score having a mutliple sum of eight on all three stages (i.e. 125 MAX COMBO - 1+2+5= 8).
    • appears after FINAL STAGE by clearing YAKYUU ROCK with 90,000+ points.
    • clear it in the good-cool course once unlocked.
  • FRIENDLY LIVE:
    • clear STAGE 1 with a MAX COMBO of 44, and then clear VISUAL 3 for STAGE 2.
    • appears after FINAL STAGE by clearing FRESH with 90,000+ points.
  • GROOVE ROCK LIVE:
    • play as SANAE♥chan [8] or MOMOKO★SAN [8], and it will appear after FINAL STAGE.
    • play on STAGE 1/2 any of the following Sana songs: WINTER POP, J-GARAGE POP REMIX, HOUSY POP, SUBURBIA. Then clear TOUCH with a combo no higher than 37, with two or more of GREATs/GOODs/BADs being less than 37.
    • clear the song in the Sana course once unlocked.
  • POWER FOLK 2 LIVE:
    • play for STAGE 1/2 a combination of the following songs: YAKYUU ROCK, FRESH, HOUSE POP, POWER FOLK 5. Then play J-GARAGE POP REMIX and FEVER clear the song with 88,888+ points.
    • clear the song in the power course once unlocked.
  • PASSION LIVE:
    • play as the KING [8], and get a perfect score (100,000) on STAGE 1 or 2. It will then appear on FINAL STAGE.
    • clear SWEAT with 90,000+ points, and it will appear on FINAL/EXtra STAGE.

Expert course songs

  • MOODY: play as ALT [8], and clear STAGE 2 with 80,000+ points. It will then appear on FINAL STAGE.
  • HEAVY ROCK: clear a combination of YAKYUU ROCK and PIANO ROCK in one round of ARCADE, and it will appear on FINAL STAGE.
  • POWER FOLK 4: clear POWER FOLK 6 with 75,000+ points, and it will be playable on the next stage.
    • Note: This will not work in NORMAL MODE, as POWER FOLK 6 appears on FINAL STAGE, maybe it impossible to unlock.
  • HIP ROCK: clear DAY DREAM with less than 10 BADs, and it will be playable on all following stages.
  • Neo GS: clear PSYCHE with a MAX COMBO of 150 or more, and it will be playable on all following stages.
  • NEW ROMANTIC: play as シノビアン青 [8] (must be this color), and it will appear after FINAL STAGE.
  • MONDO POP: play on STAGE 2 either TWEE POP, FLOWER POP, or WINTER POP, and clear the song with less than 70,000 points. It will be playable on all following stages.
  • LOUNGE: clear on STAGE 2 any song with 85,000+ points, and it will be playable on the next stage.

Time Unlocks

For those who don't want to go through the above, you can also turn the unlock system off and unlock songs based on time played in Arcade Mode. Note that ONLY time spend on actually playing the songs counts (not music select, results screens, or Game Over messages), and you cannot use Free Mode to pass time.
