Release Information

General Information / Changes

  • A new scoring system is introduced, replacing the old one.
    • MARVELOUS timing is also now on all the time in all modes, in which the arrow flashes will be brighter. Due to the more strict timing required, an AAA is now rewarded at 990,000 (Prior to this, you needed a perfect score of 1,000,000).
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game with the series title typed in CamelCase, as opposed to with spaces (Dance Dance Revolution).
  • Many of the timing issues that plagued the original SuperNOVA have been fixed up.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game to show an icon for Premium Mode (JOINT or DOUBLE only) on the upper right hand corner of the title screen.
  • The character selection screen returns, shown after selecting the game style.
    • RAGE is the default character for Player 1, while YUNI is the default character for Player 2.
    • As with DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA, AFRO is always used in TUTORIAL mode, although player-selected character(s) are used for the FINAL STAGE.
    • When selecting a RANDOM character (Male, Female, or ALL), the same character is now retained for all stages, in contrast to DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA, where the RANDOM character could change between different stages.
    • A second costume can be unlocked for ALICE, JULIO, YUNI, and every character featured in DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA, except for ROBO-ZUKIN.
    • Dancers now have facial animations, and two dancers can once more appear in VERSUS play.
    • Cut-ins are introduced, where a picture of the selected dancer appears after a set number of combos.
  • The EASY, MEDIUM, DIFFICULT, and ALL MUSIC modes from SuperNOVA have been simplified into two modes: BEGINNER and STANDARD.
    • BEGINNER features a selection of 30 songs, with BEGINNER to EXPERT difficulties, while STANDARD features all songs.
      • The BEGINNER song list is also used for the FINAL STAGE in TUTORIAL mode, although FINAL STAGE exclusives are unavailable, and only BEGINNER steps are available.
    • MODERN GIRL is the default song in BEGINNER mode, while Unbelievable is the default song in STANDARD mode.
    • In BEGINNER mode, players are guaranteed to clear the 1ST STAGE, regardless of difficulty.
    • In BEGINNER mode, four more songs (PEACE(^^)v, 華爛漫 -Flowers-, BRILLIANT 2U and PARANOiA) appear as FINAL STAGE exclusives.
      • BRILLIANT 2U is the only song in BEGINNER mode to offer the CHALLENGE difficulty.
  • e-AMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2 was planned for North America [1], but ultimately was only available during the location test on Brunswick Zone in Naperville, Illinois.
  • In the North American version, name entry for high scores has these regions selectable:
    • United States with 2-letter state abbreviation (e.g. "USA-IL")
    • Canada
    • Mexico
    • "etc." for other territories
  • During VERSUS play, if one player's life gauge becomes empty, it will no longer refill and the score will no longer increment.
  • New speed modifiers introduced: x0.25 and x0.5.
  • Modifiers BRAKE and WAVE can now be selected along with BOOST.
  • ROULETTE selection was removed.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution title to:
    • Have an intro movie since 4thMIX.
    • Display the artist for a song in-game (and also the first mainline game to list the song title in-game).
    • Use unlock codes using 8 panels and the selection buttons. This was used until X2.
    • Run down the countdown timer without delay when selecting from a set of songs.
    • The timer now displays a countdown until 00.
    • Show a PERFECT FULL COMBO message on the stage results screen.
    • Where the player can set options on EXTRA STAGE.
    • Use LIFE4 when playing on EXTRA STAGE, replacing the non-refilling "pressure" life gauge used since DDRMAX.
    • Have SPECIAL ARROW types in a mainline arcade title. This option is unlockable via ENJOY LEVEL, or using codes on North American machines.
    • Show a DANGER message on RISKY and LIFE4, as well as CHALLENGE courses. This message would not return until A.
  • Only DanceDanceRevolution game that allows sorting the song list by artist.
  • Last DanceDanceRevolution game where players are unable to change options (uses all default instead) on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE or CHALLENGE mode.
  • Version Sort returns, with three subfolders: SuperNOVA2, SuperNOVA, and EXTREME.
    • All songs that made their debut prior to SuperNOVA are grouped into the EXTREME folder.
  • Last DanceDanceRevolution game to feature Londell "Taz" Hicks as the announcer since DDRMAX.
  • Color labeling on the Music Select screen is as follows:
    • Yellow for new licensed songs/special artist collaboration songs.
    • Green for new default KONAMI original songs (including BEMANI crossovers).
    • Orange for unlocked BEMANI crossover songs.
    • Purple for unlocked KONAMI originals that are a part of the planet-themed "GRAND CROSS" song series.
    • Pink for unlocked "GROOVE RADAR" challenge-only songs.
    • Red for FINAL STAGE, EXTRA STAGE, and ENCORE EXTRA STAGE songs.
      • When fully unlocked, these songs will appear green on the songwheel.
    • Blue for SuperNOVA songs.
    • White for all songs in the EXTREME folder.
  • New songs: 62
  • Total songs: 357

FINAL STAGE/EXTRA STAGE/ENCORE EXTRA STAGE Songs

In SuperNOVA2, the requirements for EXTRA STAGE changed, and the ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE was renamed to ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.

You must get a A on the 1st or 2nd STAGE to unlock hidden song(s) for the FINAL STAGE. Getting an A allow the player to unlock the easiest difficulty played, while a AA unlocks all difficulty levels. Getting a AA or higher on Unreal, or the FINAL song on RANDOM, earns the player the ability to play NGO. Getting a AA on NGO unlocks TRIP MACHINE PhoeniX for the ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. As time went on, new songs were added via e-AMUSEMENT as playable songs, initially only playable on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE at first. Overtime the songs would move down to EXTRA STAGE, then FINAL STAGE, and then made playable for everyone.

The available difficulties for FINAL STAGE songs depend on the grade the player obtains on any stage prior to reaching the FINAL STAGE:

  • AA or AAA: all difficulties except CHALLENGE are playable.
  • A on any difficulty: only that difficulty is available (does not include CHALLENGE). If an A is obtained on CHALLENGE difficulty, EXPERT will be available for the FINAL STAGE.

By clearing the above songs (or RANDOM, using the available difficulties for NGO) during the FINAL STAGE with a grade of at least AA, the player will advance to the EXTRA STAGE. Upon reaching the EXTRA STAGE, the player must select either one of the below listed songs using their available difficulty and obtain AA or better to be qualified for the ENCORE EXTRA STAGE afterwards.

LIFE GAUGE is restricted to LIFE4 and RISKY on EXTRA STAGE and ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, respectively. The number of lives during the EXTRA STAGE is based on the score obtained on FINAL STAGE: 1 for below 962,490, two for 962,500-974,999, three for 975,000-989,990, and four for 990,000 or more.

GROOVE RADAR Special songs

The "GROOVE RADAR" Special songs are a set of six unlockable songs using the new e-AMUSEMENT members only feature, My GROOVE RADAR (Myグルーヴレーダー). They are old DanceDanceRevolution songs with new CHALLENGE charts. (Even for some that previously already had CHALLENGE charts.) These songs all appear in the SuperNOVA2 folder, all as individual songs.

The first five songs are each associated with one of the GROOVE RADAR parameters: STREAM, CHAOS, FREEZE, AIR and VOLTAGE. When a parameter reaches 100, the corresponding song is unlocked. In order to raise each parameter to 100, the player has to play songs that contain a high value of that parameter. In the case of DEAD END, you have to fill all five parameters to 100 to unlock it.

On April 10th, 2008, all the GROOVE RADAR Special songs were unlocked by default.

ZUKIN WARS

ZUKIN WARS was a monthly event exclusive to e-AMUSEMENT members. You're assigned to one of three teams: Red, Yellow, or Green. Before FINAL STAGE, you'll receive a mission with specific instructions. Complete the mission, and you'll defeat what the game calls "Dark Dancers". The team that defeats the most Dark Dancers at the end of a monthly period unlocks a new song, with everyone on the team obtaining it. Even if the player was not on the winning team, they could still unlock the song by defeating a certain amount of Dark Dancers. These winners will receive the song two weeks after the event ends. Second place teams will receive the song the following week. Players on teams who came in last, or did not meet the required Dark Dancer defeats, will receive the song a week after the second place teams.

All results are based on Japanese players only.
