Release Information
- Release Date: March 27th, 2002.
- Soundtrack Release Date: June 19th, 2002.
General Information / Changes
- Many of the KONAMI originals from 5thMIX have returned. However, none of the previous Dancemania licenses removed in DDRMAX returned.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to not feature "How To Play" in attract mode.
- First game to introduce Challenge Mode, a variant of Nonstop Mode.
- Unlike Nonstop, Challenge courses consist of a variable number of songs (as opposed to Nonstop's four songs) and under only one difficulty. Many of these songs use a separate difficulty level, CHALLENGE/ONI difficulty. No modifiers can be used, and are forced on a LIFE4 battery.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to introduce LIFE4, whereas the players are allowed up to four combo breaks and N.G. in a single song; a fourth combo break will cause an instant stage failure.
- The LIFE4 modifier depicts a battery with three sections, and an empty battery (after the player down to one life left) will cause the interface to flash red. Used until DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- Combo increases only if players get the Perfect judgment.
- Combo increased by one for jumps (instead of two in normal gameplay). Used until EXTREME.
- Scoring system works similar to DDRMAX, with one major difference: fixed maximum score is now 10,000,000 X the foot level in a song (for example, a Level 10 chart has a max possible score of 100,000,000).
- This scoring system would also be used in DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- Post-song bonuses are no longer granted.
- Difficulty ratings return, now on a scale of 1 to 10.
- Also, like in 5thMIX, the songlist is ordered by BASIC foot ratings, from easiest to hardest.
- jun makes her BEMANI debut in this game.
- Introduces the DARK modifier, which hides the stepping zone. The DARK modifier can be chosen among the OFF (Vivid), FLAT, and SOLO options. Starting with SuperNOVA, this modifier was separated.
- Last game that uses the "music from beatmania" label from old versions.
- All DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX arcade songs received brand-new banners, replacing the old banners (which were crops of the background images).
- The Dancemania licenses have generic background movies as their graphics.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to hide the actual BPM of a song by showing random 3-digit BPMs on the songwheel. This is mainly seen on EXTRA STAGE and ENCORE EXTRA STAGE songs in later games. The actual BPM is shown in the following game or when unlocked for normal play.
- First and only DanceDanceRevolution game to hide the GROOVE RADAR rating of a song by continually animating through random songs' ratings. This can only be seen on 革命 when on ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE.
- Color labeling on the songwheel has changed since DDRMAX:
- Green for default Songs new to DDRMAX2.
- Blue for songs that made their debut on DDRMAX.
- Yellow for songs that made their debut prior to DDRMAX.
- Purple for unlockable songs.
- Red for EXTRA STAGE and ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE songs.
- New songs: 53
- Total songs: 135

CHALLENGE Mode-only songs
These 19 songs are only playable in their respectives courses in Challenge Mode. In the game, WILD RUSH's Double CHALLENGE difficulty is erroneously marked as 1 instead of 8.
Also, each song is listed with their original version's banner, background and song title.
EXTRA STAGE
To unlock this song, you must clear a HEAVY chart with a rating of AA or higher on your last stage. MAXX UNLIMITED's HEAVY chart (Single or Double depending on current play style) will then become available as your EXTRA STAGE, with no way to change difficulty or song.
The EXTRA STAGE is on a "Pressure" life meter; it starts out at maximum health, but will not be replenished. In addition, the x1.5, Reverse, and Dark modifiers are in effect.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Light | Standard | Heavy | Light | Standard | Heavy | |||
MAXX UNLIMITED | Z | 0-320 | 6 | 8 | 10 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE
To unlock this song, you must AA one of MAXX UNLIMITED's HEAVY charts on EXTRA STAGE. 革命's CHALLENGE charts (Single or Double depending on current play style) will then appear as your ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE. Like with the EXTRA STAGE, you cannot change the song or chart.
The ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE is on a "Sudden Death" life system: If you break your combo, you instantly fail the stage. The modifiers 3X, Dark, and Reverse are on by default, and cannot be turned off.

Revived Songs
DDRMAX2 questionnaire results
Shortly after the release of DDRMAX, KONAMI put up a poll for what songs should be revived for inclusion in its sequel, DDRMAX2, as one of DDRMAX's most common criticisms was the removal of all songs from the series prior. The poll only included KONAMI originals in the arcade series up to 5thMIX. Originally KONAMI only planned to revive the top 15 polled songs, but poll feedback were so high they decided to revive the top 30 as default songs (a few scattered other revivals were later added as unlocks). The results of said poll, as shown on this archived DDRMAX page, are as follows:
Difficulty Changes
To be updated.
Unlock Information
In DDRMAX2, all players using the arcade machine contribute points that can unlock various content hidden in the game. A total of 31 items can be unlocked. The total of points earned is seen by the player after each play session with the item numbers that are unlocked so far (if any).
Points are earned as follows:
- Finish a song with an E or D grade: 0 points
- Finish a song with a C, B, A, or AA grade: 1 point
- Finish a song with a AAA grade: 10 points
This applies to each song played during CHALLENGE courses as well. In VERSUS play, both players contribute points; in DOUBLE play, the player contributes double the points.
By default, it takes 750 points to unlock an item, but if unlocks happen too quickly or slowly, that value will be adjusted downward or upward when the next item comes up. For example, if players earn two unlocks in a short time period, the next unlock after that will likely be raised to 1,500 points. Additionally, the items do not necessarily unlock in order. If an item is unlocked within a short time, then the next item is skipped. Once the list gets down to 30, it will cycle back to the top and unlocks will resume with the next item. Item 31 will always be unlocked last.

- Unlock Codes
Alternatively, KONAMI also provided command codes for arcade operators to manually unlock content. To do so, all the earned points in the machine have to be reset and thus, all unlocked items (if any) will be lost. Each PASS code only unlock the specified amount of items.
- Open the cabinet, and put the machine into TEST MODE by pressing the Service button inside the cabinet.
- Select GAME OPTIONS and then, CLEAR MACHINE POINT. When asked for confirmation, select YES.
- Select EXIT on the game options screens to return to the TEST MODE screen.
- Select GAME OPTIONS again but instead of pressing the Start button, step and hold on the Down arrow on the left (P1) side.
- Press and hold the Service button inside the cabinet again. While holding the button, press the P1 Start button.
- The screen will now display the SECRET screen, select APPEND.
- The screen will now display the password input screen. Use P1 Left and Right buttons on the cabinet to move the cursor, P1 Start button to change the letter at the cursor. When done with the password, press P1 Start button while holding P1 Left and Right buttons.
- The screen will display either "REGISTRATION" or "PASSWORD ERROR", then return to the SECRET screen. The former means the items have been successfully unlocked. The latter is an error message displayed when an incorrect password has been entered; re-select "APPEND" and enter the correct password.
- Select "EXIT" to return to the main TEST MODE screen. Do not select "INITIALIZE" as this will reset the machine.
