Release Information

  • Release dates:
    • Japan: July 7th, 2010
    • North America: December 31st, 2010
    • Europe: May 13th, 2011

General Information / Changes

  • First DanceDanceRevolution game not to have the announcer saying the game title on the title screen.
  • First non-spinoff DanceDanceRevolution title that NAOKI did not work on as part of the game's staff (aside from providing songs).
  • Interface has been given a complete overhaul. Songs and folders are now chosen sideways, with album jackets replacing the series' long-time traditional banners. This type of interface design was first seen on DanceDanceRevolution UNIVERSE3.
    • Most older DanceDanceRevolution songs reuse their background image from the original songs, marking the first time these have been seen in an arcade DDR game since EXTREME.
    • Jackets for new songs from SuperNOVA to X are designed from their banners instead.
  • Difficulty bar/foot ratings have been removed, but numbers are now used since its prequel.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to support PASELI.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to be in a crossover event with another BEMANI series; in this case, jubeat knit APPEND's APPEND FESTIVAL.
  • New modes: HAPPY (beginner's mode, only lets you play BEGINNER and BASIC charts from a limited songlist) and PRO (typical standard songlist).
  • Game will return to attract mode after countdown timer is up if neither HAPPY nor PRO modes are confirmed for selection. Used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
    • After selecting HAPPY mode, game will not return to attract mode after countdown timer is up. Used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
    • After selecting PRO mode, game will return to attract mode if none of the play styles were confirmed for selection and the countdown timer is turned on.
  • New EXTRA STAGE system, Replicant D-action, introduced (more detail in its own section below).
  • HIDDEN+ and SUDDEN+ options have been added. These options can only be selected on HD cabinets.
  • SPEED settings can now be set after player chooses his/her song, by pressing the left and right select buttons in increments of 0.5. Note that this can only be done several beats before the first note or before SCREEN FILTER takes effect.
  • BATTLE MODE has been removed.
  • Boo is renamed to MISS and is now merged with N.G. Almost judgement is gone.
  • Character selection screen is now exclusive to eAMUSEMENT.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature special background dance stages that play special background videos for certain songs.
  • The new choreographies introduced in DanceDanceRevolution X have been slightly modified. One of three parts of the choreography is randomly and continually selected throughout the song.
  • Dance Celebration's special choreography has been removed.
  • The system background music was composed by Jamie Thompson and Dave Phaneuf.
  • Last DanceDanceRevolution arcade release in North America until DanceDanceRevolution A.
  • Currently the last DanceDanceRevolution arcade release in Europe.
  • SPEED modifiers removed: x0.25 and x0.5.
  • User interface for options has been modified. Highlighted options will show in green and white text when changing. The rest of the options are all black text.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game to show the song's jacket in Demonstration Mode.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game to show the option RISKY (single-life bar ala ENCORE EXTRA STAGE). However, it does not appear if play style is SINGLE with training mode enabled for the other player on first stage, or VERSUS.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game to show the FAST (if a note is hit earlier) or SLOW (if a note is hit later) message during gameplay. It does not show on MARVELOUS only.
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game to have training mode enabled/disabled before the game begins. This was used until its sequel.
  • eAMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution X2 ended on December 31st, 2011.
  • New songs: 83 (not counting Chinese songs)
  • Total songs: 442

Hidden Songs

  • Remixes: These songs are playable since October 6th, 2010. To unlock these remixes, you must AAA the original version of the song corresponding to its remix. It does not matter what difficulty you do the song in; you can even use BEGINNER or EDIT data. The song will then become available in the next stage for play.
  • CS Songs: Players must have DanceDanceRevolution X CS (Japan) data on your USB memory stick. They will then be playable in the game. Available by default from February 23rd, 2011.

EXTRA STAGE / ENCORE EXTRA STAGE

The EXTRA STAGE system is different from the previous games. To unlock the EXTRA STAGE this time around, you must now AA/AAA all of your songs in one game session. There are no FINAL STAGE-exclusive songs in X2.

Doing so unlocks KIMONO♥PRINCESS as your EXTRA STAGE, although what difficulty level you can play the song on depends on how many stages you play and how many difficulty levels the songs you play are.

Here are the required number of difficulty levels required to play KIMONO♥PRINCESS' charts, depending on the number of songs you play. From left to right point requirement-wise: BEGINNER, BASIC, DIFFICULT, and lastly EXPERT. Note that reaching a certain amount also unlocks the difficulty levels under that, too.

  • 2 songs: 1-12, 13-18, 19-26, 27-38
  • 3 songs: 1-18, 19-27, 28-39, 40-57
  • 4 songs: 1-24, 25-36, 37-52, 53-76
  • 5 songs: 1-30, 31-45, 45-65, 66-95

Getting a AA or higher on KIMONO♥PRINCESS on EXPERT difficulty unlocks the ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, roppongi EVOLVED. Note that are four different versions of the song; which version you get is random. You can't choose another song or difficulty other than EXPERT for your ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, though you are allowed to set your options.

On August 25th, 2010, the Boss Rush X2 course was unlocked, giving access to roppongi EVOLVED's DIFFICULT charts and on more than 1 life for the first time.

Both KIMONO♥PRINCESS and roppongi EVOLVED were unlocked for regular play on January 26th, 2011.

Replicant D-action

Replicant D-action is a new EXTRA STAGE event in DanceDanceRevolution X2, which began on launch date (July 7th, 2010). Its design is similar to CARDINAL GATE from beatmania IIDX 13 DistorteD. By fulfilling certain requirements, the player can unlock a special folder with up to six new songs. Each song is represented by a color, and the requirements for each are listed below:

  • Pierce The Sky / JAKAZiD feat. K.N.
    • Cyan. Pass 20 different songs in the DDR X2 folder (other songs in the Replicant D-action folder also count).
  • Sakura Sunrise / Ryu☆
    • Green. Pass 2 different songs in each game folder (12 folders or 24 songs in total).
  • Shiny World / CAPACITY GATE
    • Yellow. Pass 5 different courses and 1 drill course (the same course played on multiple difficulties does not count, and ORDER courses (custom courses) also do not count).
  • Anti-Matter / Orbit1 & Milo
    • Blue. Play Trial Mode 3 times (both players must pass), then play Pierce The Sky and Shiny World on the same difficulty to unlock that one difficulty for Anti-Matter.
  • New Decade / Sota F.
    • Orange. Full combo 15 different stepcharts (multiple difficulties for the same song count, but full comboing a course does not count), then play Sakura Sunrise and Shiny World on the same difficulty to unlock that one difficulty for New Decade.
  • POSSESSION / TAG underground
    • Purple. Pass songs on CHALLENGE difficulty until their total levels are at least 100 (the same song can be played multiple times), then play Pierce The Sky and Sakura Sunrise on the same difficulty to unlock that one difficulty for POSSESSION.

Requirements for Single and Double Play must be met separately, except for Anti-Matter's Trial Mode requirement which counts for both Single and Double. Once the player has met the requirements for at least one song, a special Replicant D-action folder will appear during EXTRA STAGE only, containing all songs (between one and six) that the player has met the requirements for. Selecting the folder displays a confirmation message, warning that once the folder is opened, it cannot be exited until the end of the credit. Inside the folder, a special background music plays, hiding any song previews. While playing each song, the player's dance character battles a RINON clone of the song's color, who appears as a secondary background dancer. As such, the event and the folder can only be accessed in Single or Double Play and not in Versus Play.

If the player clears one of the above six songs on EXPERT with a AA, they will earn a medal of the song's color. Once the player has earned all six medals (one from each song) in any order, the results screen of the sixth song will lead to a special cutscene, immediately followed by an ENCORE EXTRA STAGE announcement with the song locked to Valkyrie dimension on EXPERT difficulty. As such, the player has no time to set options for Valkyrie dimension and must use the same options as their previous song. However, it is still possible to use the left and right buttons to change speed modifiers at the beginning of Valkyrie dimension. Attempting Valkyrie dimension costs all six medals, and the player must reobtain them to play Valkyrie dimension again.

Updates / Regional Differences

As of August 31st, 2010, it is possible to obtain medals by getting a AA on BASIC or DIFFICULT; however, Valkyrie dimension's difficulty will still be locked to EXPERT. In addition, any arrow-removing options (CUT1/CUT2, Jumps Off, Freezes Off) that the player has set on their sixth medal song will be unset for Valkyrie dimension. (This fixes an exploit where it was possible to play Valkyrie dimension's EXPERT chart on CUT2, making it much easier, by obtaining the last medal on Sakura Sunrise on CUT2.)

As of November 2nd, 2010, the VS REPLICANT boss course is unlocked, making it possible to play all 7 Replicant D-action songs in a row on one credit, and also revealing Valkyrie dimension's DIFFICULT charts for the first time.

As of February 23rd, 2011, the Replicant D-action event has ended, the special folder is no longer accessible, and all seven songs are unlocked for normal play (revealing Valkyrie dimension's BASIC and BEGINNER charts for the first time). In addition, CHALLENGE charts for the last four songs are unlocked for Marathon Mode.

As of April 1st, 2011, the four CHALLENGE charts that were previously Marathon Mode-exclusive are unlocked for normal play.

In the Western releases of DanceDanceRevolution X2, due to the releases not supporting e-AMUSEMENT (required for player information to be saved across credits), the unlock mechanics of the seven songs were heavily simplified. On release date (December 31st, 2010), all seven songs were locked. On July 28th, 2011, the first three songs were unlocked for normal play and the VS REPLICANT course was unlocked (allowing access to the remaining four songs). On October 1st, 2011, the remaining four songs were unlocked for normal play.

APPEND FESTIVAL

APPEND FESTIVAL is an event in jubeat knit APPEND where playing songs in jubeat knit APPEND will unlock songs in other BEMANI games. As such, these two songs are exclusive to the Japanese DanceDanceRevolution X2 release. The APPEND FESTIVAL ran from March 10th, 2011 to September 9th, 2011.

To unlock Theory of Eternity, I'm so Happy has to be played in DanceDanceRevolution X2 using an e-AMUSEMENT PASS from March 23th, 2011 onward. Then in jubeat knit APPEND with the same PASS, Theory of Eternity has to be played (CLEAR or not) in order to unlock it in DanceDanceRevolution X2. On September 13th, 2011, Theory of Eternity was unlocked for everyone to play, making it the very last song unlocked in DanceDanceRevolution X2.

For these particular songs, the original Japanese version is used on all the difficulties except CHALLENGE. The CHALLENGE charts use the Chinese version of the song. The jacket and artist name change on the Results Screen but not on the Song Selection Screen. For the two songs that were not released in X2, they were kept in their original release folders.
