To | To play MAXX UNLIMITED on EXTRA STAGE, you must clear a HEAVY chart with a rating of AA or higher on your last stage. MAXX UNLIMITED's HEAVY chart (Single or Double depending on current play style) will then become available as your EXTRA STAGE, with no way to change difficulty or song. The EXTRA STAGE is on a "Pressure" life meter; it starts out at maximum health, but will not be replenished. In addition, the x1.5, Reverse, and Dark modifiers are in effect.

Like with the EXTRA STAGE, you cannot change the song or chart. The ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE is on a "Sudden Death" life system: If you break your combo, you instantly fail the stage. The modifiers 3X, Dark, and Reverse are on by default, and cannot be turned off.
Both of these are unlocked when you reach level 30, or when the machine operator enters the 6th PASS (FINAL) code.

CHALLENGE MODE is a mode that is introduced in DDRMAX2. In this mode, you play a set of songs back-to-back with no breaks, similar to NONSTOP in earlier games. However, it works very differently:
* Instead of the usual dance gauge, you have a battery with three marks on it. Each time you get anything lower than a PERFECT or GREAT, or break a freeze arrow, a part of the battery will deplete; four missteps results in an instant GAME OVER. The battery will refill between songs. | * Instead of the usual dance gauge, you have a battery with three marks on it. Release Information
- Release Date: March 27th, 2002
- Soundtrack release date:
- DDRMAX2 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK: June 19th, 2002
General Information / Changes
- Many of the KONAMI originals from 5thMIX returned. However, none of the previous Dancemania licenses removed in DDRMAX returned.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to not feature "How To Play" in attract mode.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game with CHALLENGE difficulty and CHALLENGE mode.
- CHALLENGE mode is a variant of NONSTOP mode, with courses containing a variable number of songs (from 5 to 10) under a single difficulty. Unlike NONSTOP mode, players may not set any modifiers (some courses had certain stages with fixed modifiers instead).
- When playing CHALLENGE courses, the LIFE GAUGE is instead replaced with LIFE4 (depicted as a battery with three segments). Getting any four missteps (combo breaks and/or N.G.s on Freeze Arrows) anytime during a song will trigger an instant stage failure. LIFE4 would remain exclusive in this mode until the EXTRA STAGE system rework in DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2.
- Only DanceDanceRevolution title to hide the actual title from CHALLENGE-only songs by displaying their original version's title, banner and background when played in their respective courses. This was changed in DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- Scoring system works similar to DDRMAX, with one major difference: fixed maximum score is now 10,000,000 X the foot level in a song (for example, a Level 10 chart has a max possible score of 100,000,000).
- This scoring system would also be used in DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME.
- Post-song bonuses are no longer granted.
- Difficulty ratings return, now on a scale of 1 to 10.
- First mainline DanceDanceRevolution game to have a difficulty level of 10.
- The default song sorting order is now by group/color, followed by the Single Light foot rating, and then by title.
- Junko Karashima makes her BEMANI debut.
- First appearance of the DARK modifier (also known as STEP ZONE in later games), which hides the stepping zone. Until SuperNOVA, DARK is placed under the ARROW option.
- Final DanceDanceRevolution game that uses the "music from beatmania" label from old versions.
- All DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX arcade songs received brand-new banners, replacing the old banners (which were crops of the background images).
- The Dancemania licenses have generic movie backgrounds for their graphics.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to hide the actual BPM of a song by quickly cycling through random 3-digit BPMs on the songwheel. For this game, this feature is used for MAXX UNLIMITED and 革命. Their actual BPM would not be shown until the following game.
- First and only DanceDanceRevolution game to hide the GROOVE RADAR rating of a song by continually animating through random songs' ratings. This can only be seen on 革命 during ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE. 革命 will show its normal GROOVE RADAR rating during all other instances.
- Color labeling on the songwheel has changed since DDRMAX:
- Green for default songs new to DDRMAX2.
- Blue for DDRMAX songs.
- Yellow for songs that first appeared before DDRMAX.
- Purple for unlocks.
- Red for EXTRA STAGE and ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE songs.
- Total songs: 135

EXTRA / ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE
To play MAXX UNLIMITED on EXTRA STAGE, you must clear a HEAVY chart with a rating of AA or higher on your last stage.
Getting a AA on one of MAXX UNLIMITED's HEAVY charts on EXTRA STAGE unlocks 革命's CHALLENGE charts (Single or Double depending on current play style) for play on ONE MORE EXTRA STAGE.

CHALLENGE MODE
CHALLENGE MODE is a mode that is introduced in DDRMAX2. In this mode, you play a set of songs back-to-back with no breaks, similar to NONSTOP in earlier games. However, it works very differently:
- Instead of the usual dance gauge, you have a battery with three marks on it. Each time you get anything lower than a PERFECT or GREAT, or break a freeze arrow, a part of the battery will deplete; four missteps results in an instant GAME OVER. The battery will refill between songs.
- The number of lives returned back depends on the difficulty of the next song: 1 life for Level 8 and below, 2 lives for Level 9, and 3 lives for Level 10.
- Modifiers cannot be set in this mode; you are locked into default colored arrows at 1X.
- Your combo will only increase with PERFECTs.
- Jumps count as one step, unlike in regular play.
- Regardless if you fail or pass a course, you get an overall percentage out of 100 of your performance in the course, which can also be seen in the top left/right corners of the screen as you play.
Exclusive to this course as well are 19 remixes of older DanceDanceRevolution songs that use the new difficulty level of CHALLENGE. These CHALLENGE-only charts can only be played in this mode. They are listed with their original version's song titles, banners, and backgrounds. These unique songs will be marked with an asterisk. These songs were later made available in regular play in the following game, with them receiving unique graphics and receiving their proper titles.
Only the first three courses are available by default. The rest must be unlocked.

Revived Songs
DDRMAX2 questionnaire results
Shortly after the release of DDRMAX, KONAMI put up a poll for what songs should be revived for inclusion in its sequel, DDRMAX2, as one of DDRMAX's most common criticisms was the removal of all songs from the series prior. The poll only included KONAMI originals in the arcade series up to 5thMIX. KONAMI only planned to revive the top 15 polled songs, but poll feedback was so high they decided to revive the top 30 as default songs (a few scattered other revivals were later added as unlocks). (The top 5 songs also appeared in the Japanese CS release of DDRMAX2.) The results of said poll, as shown on this archived DDRMAX page, are as follows:

Unlock Information
In DDRMAX2, all players using the arcade machine contribute points that can unlock various content hidden in the game. A total of 31 items can be unlocked. The total of points earned is seen by the player after each play session with the item numbers that are unlocked so far (if any).
Points are earned as follows:
- Finish a song with an E or D grade: 0 points
- Finish a song with a C, B, A, or AA grade: 1 point
- Finish a song with a AAA grade: 10 points
This applies to each song played during CHALLENGE courses as well. In VERSUS play, both players contribute points; in DOUBLE play, the player contributes double the points.
By default, it takes 750 points to unlock an item, but if unlocks happen too quickly or slowly, that value will be adjusted downward or upward when the next item comes up. For example, if players earn two unlocks in a short time period, the next unlock after that will likely be raised to 1,500 points. Additionally, the items do not necessarily unlock in order. If an item is unlocked within a short time, then the next item is skipped. Once the list gets down to 30, it will cycle back to the top and unlocks will resume with the next item. Item 31 will always be unlocked last.

- Unlock Codes
Alternatively, KONAMI also provided command codes for arcade operators to manually unlock content. To do so, all the earned points in the machine have to be reset and thus, all unlocked items (if any) will be lost. Each PASS code only unlock the specified amount of items.
- Open the cabinet, and put the machine into TEST MODE by pressing the Service button inside the cabinet.
- Select GAME OPTIONS and then, CLEAR MACHINE POINT. When asked for confirmation, select YES.
- Select EXIT on the game options screens to return to the TEST MODE screen.
- Select GAME OPTIONS again but instead of pressing the Start button, step and hold on the Down arrow on the left (P1) side.
- Press and hold the Service button inside the cabinet again. While holding the button, press the P1 Start button.
- The screen will now display the SECRET screen, select APPEND.
- The screen will now display the password input screen. Use P1 Left and Right buttons on the cabinet to move the cursor, P1 Start button to change the letter at the cursor. When done with the password, press P1 Start button while holding P1 Left and Right buttons.
- The screen will display either "REGISTRATION" or "PASSWORD ERROR", then return to the SECRET screen. The former means the items have been successfully unlocked. The latter is an error message displayed when an incorrect password has been entered; re-select "APPEND" and enter the correct password.
- Select "EXIT" to return to the main TEST MODE screen. Do not select "INITIALIZE" as this will reset the machine.
