- North America: June 9th, 2009
General Information / Changes
- Rating system expanded on, from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see DanceDanceRevolution X difficulty changes list).
- New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace the one used in the series since DDRMAX.
- The first arcade DanceDanceRevolution release to feature the music licensing deal with A Different Drum records, previously an exclusive to the DDR ULTRAMIX CS series.
- Shock Arrows introduced on some CHALLENGE charts. Songs with Shock Arrows in their CHALLENGE charts show an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down, just like a misstep would.
- Scoring system is the same as that of SuperNOVA2, with some modifications:
- Step Score (SC): 1.000.000 ÷ (Number of steps [A jump will be considered a step in scoring] + Number of Freeze Arrows [A pair of Freeze Arrows that start and end at the same time will be considered as one Freeze in scoring] + Number of 4-way or 8-way Shock Arrows).
- Subtitles for every song are now merged with song titles at the right side.
- DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME folder from DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2 has been separated to eight folders: 1stMIX until EXTREME. Unlike in DanceDanceRevolution EXTREME, each song is inside its respective folder where it made its arcade debut.
- First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature songs from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
- To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DanceDanceRevolution franchise, several old Dancemania licenses are revived with new charts and cuts. These are known as X-edits.
- New CHALLENGE-only charts named X-Specials are added for several old KONAMI original DanceDanceRevolution songs, though they show up as separate songs in the song list.
- The system background music was composed by Drew Campbell.
- First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game since the series' beginning to not have NAOKI or jun as the sound director; instead, it's the late Jason Michael "Stillwind" Borenstein, best known for his work in the ULTRAMIX/UNIVERSE series.
- This release retired the Python 2 hardware used since SuperNOVA and replaced it with PC-based hardware (BEMANI PC). This improved the graphics quality of the game on all cabinets, and allowed 720p widescreen HD graphics on new cabinets, but also meant that the game was slightly buggier than its predecessors due to migration issues.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to provide an extra second after the countdown timer is over to give the player a chance to press down Start button for options.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to play back the sample of a selected song almost in an instant after selecting from previous or next song.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to play back a random announcer message if 20 seconds of the countdown timer remains.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to give 10 seconds (instead of 5 seconds as in SuperNOVA2) of the countdown timer remaining with accompanying warning sound.
- Several modifiers were added or modified:
- New SPEED modifiers have been introduced: x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5.
- SCREEN FILTER modifier has been introduced, with choices of OFF, DARK, DARKER, and DARKEST.
- CUT modifier ON was renamed as ON1, and an ON2 modifier was added.
- Color of text of modifiers are now distinguishable from the menu of options: Green for default, white for modified.
- Number of combos are now color-coded. They will be based from the last fragment of combos. White for all MARVELOUS, yellow for MARVELOUS and PERFECT only, and green for MARVELOUS, PERFECT, and GREAT only.
- Obtaining an N.G. from a Freeze Arrow or a set of Shock Arrows will break the combo.
- Last DanceDanceRevolution game to show usage of Freeze Arrows before the game begins.
- The overall stage results screen was revised.
- Only DanceDanceRevolution game that can stop the countdown timer on the overall stage results screen.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show stars throwing beyond the stepping zone for every MARVELOUS timing of arrows. This was also used on the sequel.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to use 8 lives on the battery gauge of certain courses. This setting was used until DanceDanceRevolution X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- Only DanceDanceRevolution game that can select unavailable and nonexistent difficulties.
- Example 1: The song list is sorted by series title on EXTRA STAGE. The song On The Break is highlighted and the difficulty EXPERT is selected. Thee only available difficulty for the song SABER WING is EXPERT. Switching difficulty from EXPERT to DIFFICULT and switching to the next song will select the unavailable difficulty for SABER WING. Proceeding with this condition will use SABER WING's DIFFICULT chart.
- Example 2: The song list is sorted by ABC on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. The song Dance Dance Revolution is highlighted and the difficulty CHALLENGE is selected. The only difficulty for the song Dance Dance Revolution(X-Special) is CHALLENGE. Switching difficulty from CHALLENGE to EXPERT and switching to the next song will select the nonexistent difficulty for Dance Dance Revolution(X-Special). Proceeding with this condition will result in rebooting of the game after 15 to 45 seconds of no response from the game.
- Exception from Example 2: The song list is sorted by series title on 1st STAGE. The song SABER WING is highlighted and the difficulty EXPERT is selected. Switching difficulty from EXPERT to CHALLENGE and switching to the previous song will select the nonexistent difficulty for On The Break. Proceeding with this condition will use On The Break's EXPERT chart.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show laser beam effect with corresponding message after every stage (Music selection mode) or end of course (Course selection mode) during the game after attaining FULL COMBO, PERFECT FULL COMBO, or MARVELOUS FULL COMBO.
- It is also the first game to show the FULL COMBO and MARVELOUS FULL COMBO messages on stage results.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game where the player can set options on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show difference of incrementing scores between current player and player that attained machine-specific high score under stepping judgment during game play.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to have training mode before the game begins, which only appears on first stage. Once training mode is enabled, it cannot be disabled; this feature was not carried to X2.
- If the selected song has a BEGINNER chart, that will be used. Otherwise, option CUT is set to ON1. Used until DanceDanceRevolution X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to include USB ports for importing edit data of certain available songs.
- Final DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to use songwheel interface which has been used since DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX.
- Also, the final DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to use traditional banners since the original DanceDanceRevolution.
- Only DanceDanceRevolution game wherein a certain song is not displayed in song wheel after unlocking all songs.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show icon for Edit Oni on upper right hand corner of title screen.
- First arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to support a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio.
- Also the first HD arcade DanceDanceRevolution game, supporting up to 720p.
- Both of these features are only available on new cabinets.
- New songs: 89
- Total songs: 392 (Japanese)

Xmix
The following songs are medleys of several DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2 songs. Much like the DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX Long Version songs, playing an Xmix takes two non-Xmix stages. None of the Xmixes have BEGINNER or CHALLENGE charts. They appear on second to the FINAL STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.

X-Special Charts
Exclusive to the arcade version of DanceDanceRevolution X are X-Special Charts, which are old DanceDanceRevolution original songs with brand-new, CHALLENGE-exclusive charts. These charts are initially only playable on the EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA STAGEs. Each mix consists of two songs: an EXTRA STAGE and an ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. There are 8 sets of songs from the first game through EXTREME (in the case of DDRMAX through EXTREME, the EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA STAGEs are in the same pattern as the original games' songs). These charts are all listed under the DanceDanceRevolution X category, despite being old songs.
The first set of stages (for the 1st game) were added on February 12th, 2009. The other songs were added to DanceDanceRevolution X on March 16th, 2009, but were not unlocked until much later. To unlock the X-Special charts, the player must complete certain requirements for the FINAL STAGE, usually relating to the mix of origin of the song set. All the X-Special charts were unlocked for normal play on October 1st, 2009 (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette (X-Special)).
Unlock Schedule
All the X-Special songs require special conditions in order to make them appears. Even when unlocked for normal play, the songs below can still be played using the EXTRA STAGE system.
