As like DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2, when playing EXTRA STAGE, the LIFE GAUGE is restricted to LIFE4. One life is given by default, though it can be increased depending on the score attained on FINAL STAGE: getting at least 962,500 will give two lives, and 975,000 will give a full four lives. In all cases, the song chosen must be labeled as a red-text in the song wheel in order to count. | |||
To access EXTRA STAGE, the song played on FINAL STAGE has to be either On The Break or being chosen by RANDOM on any difficulty by obtaining at least an AA. In order for On The Break to be labeled red, songs prior to the FINAL STAGE must be cleared with at least an A on any difficulty: | |||
* AA | * Clearing with at least an AA will allow access to all difficulties, regardless of difficulty chosen. | ||
* A | * In the case of BEGINNER, a FULL COMBO clear or better is also required. | ||
* In the case of CHALLENGE, clearing it with an A will only unlock EXPERT instead. | |||
* If BATTLE mode is played, the CPU level must be at least two stars upon reaching FINAL STAGE. | |||
* In the case for Xmix songs, it will also satisfy both pre-FINAL and FINAL STAGE as it counts as two songs; however, BEGINNER charts will not be accessible. | |||
All songs new to DanceDanceRevolution X (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) were unlocked for normal play as of October 1st, 2009, and its EXTRA STAGE system is still accessible. | |||
=== Default songs === | |||
SABER WING is the only song available by default during EXTRA STAGE, along with its remix SABER WING (AKIRA ISHIHARA Headshot mix), providing that the player must accumulate Foot Ratings leading up to the EXTRA STAGE: | |||

Clearing either EXTRA STAGE songs with at least an AA will earn access to ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. Clearing SABER WING will unlock Horatio for the ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, while playing its remix will get on the bounce or Trigger (providing if the player fulfills Foot Rating requirements above). | |||
The | On The Break was unlocked on April 9th, 2009, followed by SABER WING and its remix on May 21st, 2009, Horatio on July 2nd, 2009, on the bounce on August 13th, 2009, and Trigger on September 17th, 2009. | ||
==== X-Special Charts ==== | |||
Added on February 12th, 2009 are X-Special Charts, those being former songs that are given new CHALLENGE-only charts that previously appeared from the first eight mainline games from the first game through EXTREME. Each game consist of two songs where they are previously boss songs (and in the case of DDRMAX and later, EXTRA and ENCORE EXTRA songs). These songs would appear on their respective folders upon their appearance (though it would later be relocated on the X folder instead in the next game despite being former songs). Clearing the respective X-Special song with at least an AA grade will access the corresponding version's ENCORE EXTRA STAGE. | |||
The other seven set of songs are added on March 16th, 2009 and all of these songs (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) are unlocked for regular play on October 1st, 2009. Like EXTRA Stage songs, these songs requires a clear with at least an AA grade or better before reaching FINAL STAGE. To access these charts, these requirements are as follows: | |||
{|class="wikitable" border="1px" style="background:#ccccee; font-size:90%; text-align: center; margin: 1em auto 1em auto" | {|class="wikitable" border="1px" style="background:#ccccee; font-size:90%; text-align: center; margin: 1em auto 1em auto" | ||

Release Information
- Release Dates:
- Japan: December 24th, 2008
- Europe: June 3rd, 2009
- North America: June 9th, 2009
- Slogan: 革命の瞬間(とき)を見逃すな! (kakumei no toki wo minogasu na!) (Don't miss the moment of revolution!)
General Information / Changes
- First European DanceDanceRevolution arcade release to be named "DanceDanceRevolution" instead of "Dancing Stage".
- Difficulty ratings have been expanded from 1-10 to 1-20. Older songs were re-rated to reflect this (see DanceDanceRevolution X difficulty changes list).
- New announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog from Ozomatli, replace Londell "Taz" Hicks, which was used in the series since DDRMAX.
- This release retired the Python 2 hardware used since SuperNOVA and replaced it with PC-based hardware (BEMANI PC). This improved the graphics quality of the game on all cabinets, and allowed 720p widescreen HD graphics on new cabinets, but also meant that the game was slightly buggier than its predecessors due to migration issues.
- The American and European versions of X and its sequel run on modified Dell PCs instead.
- Shock Arrows introduced, exclusive to CHALLENGE charts, which feature an icon near the banner when the chart is selected. Stepping on them results in your gauge going down like a misstep would.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game since DanceDanceRevolution 4thMIX CS to have CD designs for a handful of songs when selected.
- Scoring system is similar to SuperNOVA2's, with some modifications:
- Step Score (SC): 1.000.000 ÷ (Number of steps [A jump will be considered a step in scoring] + Number of Freeze Arrows [A pair of Freeze Arrows that start at the same time will be considered as one Freeze in scoring] + Number of 4-way or 8-way Shock Arrows).
- The EXTREME folder from SuperNOVA2 is now separated into eight folders: 1stMIX→EXTREME.
- Unlike in EXTREME, each song is inside its respective folder where it made its arcade debut.
- First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature songs from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games, as well as the only DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to feature background dance stages from the HOTTEST PARTY Wii games.
- First arcade DanceDanceRevolution game where characters can dance to dedicated dance routines. Selected HOTTEST PARTY crossovers had dance routines carried over, while selected X songs received new dance routines.
- For new songs without dedicated dance routines (excluding X-Specials), characters will dance a different choreography from the HOTTEST PARTY games depending on the maximum BPM of the song:
- 131 to 159 BPM: escape or Closer to my Heart (jun remix).
- 160 BPM or higher: I WANT YOUR LOVE (Darwin remix) or REACH THE SKY (Orbit1 remix).
- This carried over from X2 to 2014, after which they were replaced in DanceDanceRevolution A by the routines introduced in the ULTRAMIX series instead for all songs without dedicated dance routines.
- For new songs without dedicated dance routines (excluding X-Specials), characters will dance a different choreography from the HOTTEST PARTY games depending on the maximum BPM of the song:
- The BOOM BOOM BOOM stage background now features a slightly different background from the one used in the CS releases. This would carry over to every subsequent installment.
- BOOM DARK, a darker variant of the BOOM BOOM BOOM stage, is introduced in this installment. It did not appear in the CS releases.
- A third cut-in type is introduced; a different portrait of the player's selected character that appears when the player is halfway through the song and again when the player is 90% done with the song.
- All PARANOiA and TRIP MACHINE songs' banners had their fonts changed.
- However, TRIP MACHINE PhoeniX's English banner remained unaltered in the North American/European release.
- To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DanceDanceRevolution franchise, several old Dancemania licenses are revived with new charts and cuts. These are known as X-edits.
- New CHALLENGE-only charts named X-Specials are added for several old KONAMI original DanceDanceRevolution songs, though they show up as separate songs in the song list.
- Licenses from synth-pop label A Different Drum make their debut in the mainline arcade series, formerly an exclusive to the ULTRAMIX and UNIVERSE console game series.
- The system background music was composed by Drew Campbell.
- First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game since the series' beginning to not have NAOKI or jun as the sound director; instead, it's the late Jason Michael "Stillwind" Borenstein, best known for his work in the ULTRAMIX/UNIVERSE series.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to provide an extra second after the countdown timer is over to give the player a chance to press down Start button for options.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to play back the sample of a selected song almost in an instant after selecting from the previous/next song.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to play back a random announcer message if 20 seconds of the countdown timer remains.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to give 10 seconds (instead of 5 as in SuperNOVA2) of the countdown timer remaining with accompanying warning sound.
- Several modifiers were added or modified:
- New SPEED modifiers introduced: x2.5, x3.5, x4, x4.5, x5.5, x6, x6.5, x7, and x7.5.
- SCREEN FILTER modifier has been introduced, with choices of OFF, DARK, DARKER, and DARKEST.
- CUT modifier ON is renamed to ON1, and an ON2 modifier was added to allow removal of non-4th/8th notes.
- Modifier text colors are now distinguishable in options: green for default, white for modified.
- Combos are now color-coded, based on which judgements obtained during a song. The color is white for all MARVELOUS, yellow for at least one PERFECT, and green for at least one GREAT.
- Getting a FULL COMBO will now produce a laser-beam splash effect, with the color based on the combo color attained.
- Obtaining an N.G. from a Freeze Arrow or a set of Shock Arrows breaks the combo.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game whose engine properly supports triplets (12th, 24th, and 48th notes) instead of rounding them to the nearest 64th note.
- As a result, charts of songs such as TSUGARU, 三毛猫ロック, Healing-D-Vision, and bag are properly quantized for the first time.
- Last arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to feature BATTLE as a game mode.
- Last arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to show a display about Freeze Arrows before the game begins.
- The overall stage results screen was revised.
- Only DanceDanceRevolution game that can stop the countdown timer on the overall stage results screen.
- Any Full Combo obtained during the stage now display its message below the rank.
- First DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to have system background music play during the stage results screen, and the only one until 2014 to do such.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show stars throwing beyond the stepping zone for every MARVELOUS timing of arrows. This was also used on the sequel.
- NONSTOP and CHALLENGE mode has been merged into COURSE mode, with some changes:
- Courses either use the traditional Life Gauge or Battery system (eight on NORMAL; four on DIFFICULT), depending on how many stages are there in the course. This setting was used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- Courses are categorized as: CONCEPT, RANKING (both being Internet Ranking courses), DANCE DRILL (Class mode-esque courses) and WEEKLY (player submitted courses)
- All Internet Ranking courses have two difficulties, as like NONSTOP mode. DANCE DRILL and WEEKLY courses only have one difficulty.
- Only DanceDanceRevolution game that can select unavailable and nonexistent difficulties.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game where the player can set options on ENCORE EXTRA STAGE.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to show difference of increment scores between the current player and the player that attained machine-specific high score under stepping judgment during game play.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to have TRAINING MODE before the game begins, which only appears on the first stage. Once enabled, it cannot be disabled; this feature was not carried to X2.
- If the selected song has a BEGINNER chart, that will be used. Otherwise, option CUT is set to ON1. This was used until X3 VS 2ndMIX.
- First DanceDanceRevolution game to include USB ports for importing edit data of certain available songs.
- Also the first to show an icon for Edit on the upper right hand corner of title screen.
- Last DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to use song banners.
- Also the last DanceDanceRevolution arcade game to use the songwheel interface used since 5thMIX.
- e-AMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution X was advertised for North America [1], but it was never available for the game on that region.
- Color labeling on the Music Select screen has changed since SuperNOVA2. It's now as follows:
- yellow for new licenses and contest songs.
- blue for new KONAMI originals / BEMANI crossovers.
- purple for "X-mix" songs.
- red for current EXTRA STAGE and ENCORE EXTRA STAGE songs.
- white for older songs.
- In X's location test, new songs were simply all yellow; older songs were white.
- eAMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution X ended on August 31st, 2010.
- New songs: 89
- Total songs: 392 (Asia), 388 (North America/Europe)

Xmix
The following songs are medleys of several DanceDanceRevolution X and SuperNOVA2 songs. Much like the DanceDanceRevolution 5thMIX Long Version songs, playing an Xmix takes two non-Xmix stages. None of the Xmixes have BEGINNER or CHALLENGE charts. They appear on second to the FINAL STAGE when selecting songs other than Xmix.

EXTRA STAGE
In order for On The Break to be labeled red, songs prior to the FINAL STAGE must be cleared with at least an A on any difficulty:
- Clearing with at least an AA will allow access to all difficulties, regardless of difficulty chosen.
- In the case of BEGINNER, a FULL COMBO clear or better is also required.
- In the case of CHALLENGE, clearing it with an A will only unlock EXPERT instead.
- If BATTLE mode is played, the CPU level must be at least two stars upon reaching FINAL STAGE.
- In the case for Xmix songs, it will also satisfy both pre-FINAL and FINAL STAGE as it counts as two songs; however, BEGINNER charts will not be accessible.
All songs new to DanceDanceRevolution X (except PARANOiA MAX~DIRTY MIX~ in roulette(X-Special)) were unlocked for normal play as of October 1st, 2009, and its EXTRA STAGE system is still accessible.
Default songs
SABER WING is the only song available by default during EXTRA STAGE, along with its remix SABER WING (AKIRA ISHIHARA Headshot mix), providing that the player must accumulate Foot Ratings leading up to the EXTRA STAGE:
Number of stages (1st STAGE to FINAL STAGE) |
BEGINNER | BASIC | DIFFICULT | EXPERT | Accessing Trigger |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 1 (2 x 0 + 1) | 13 (2 x 6 + 1) | 19 (2 x 9 + 1) | 27 (2 x 13 + 1) | 40 (3 x 13 + 1) |
3 | 1 (3 x 0 + 1) | 19 (3 x 6 + 1) | 28 (3 x 9 + 1) | 40 (3 x 13 + 1) | 53 (4 x 13 + 1) |
4 | 1 (4 x 0 + 1) | 25 (4 x 6 + 1) | 37 (4 x 9 + 1) | 53 (4 x 13 + 1) | 66 (5 x 13 + 1) |
5 | 1 (5 x 0 + 1) | 31 (5 x 6 + 1) | 45 (5 x 9 + 1) | 66 (5 x 13 + 1) | 79 (6 x 13 + 1) |
On The Break was unlocked on April 9th, 2009, followed by SABER WING and its remix on May 21st, 2009, Horatio on July 2nd, 2009, on the bounce on August 13th, 2009, and Trigger on September 17th, 2009.
X-Special Charts
To access these charts, these requirements are as follows:
